The Maharashtra government has announced a major extension for the state-appointed panel investigating historical Maratha-Kunbi records, extending its tenure by one full year through June 30, 2027. This executive decision comes right before activist Manoj Jarange begins his scheduled indefinite hunger strike in Jalna district to demand reservations for the Maratha community under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota.
Details of the Panel Extension
According to a Government Resolution (GR) issued on August 25, the multi-member panel chaired by retired Bombay High Court Justice Sandeep Shinde will receive additional time to complete its extensive mandate. The panel was originally established in 2023 to formulate a comprehensive mechanism for issuing Kunbi caste certificates to eligible Maratha community members. Since Kunbi records grant access to official OBC classification, this verification process is crucial for securing reservation benefits in public sector employment and educational admissions. The committee's previous operational mandate was set to conclude on June 30, 2026, but will now continue for another twelve months until June 30, 2027.
Cabinet Sub-Committee Findings and Delays
The decision to grant the one-year extension follows explicit recommendations from the cabinet sub-committee on Maratha reservation, which is headed by senior minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil. Official documentation notes that genealogical tracing and record examination efforts in multiple districts across Maharashtra are still underway and incomplete. Given the extensive archival searching required to establish accurate family lineages and historical Kunbi documentation, officials determined that the panel required substantial extra time to finalize its findings and publish a complete report.
Jarange Maintains Fast Plan in Jalna
Despite the government's procedural announcement, activist Manoj Jarange remains firm on launching his indefinite hunger strike from August 29. The protest is scheduled to take place at Antarwali Sarati village located in Jalna district. Jarange has consistently reiterated his core demand that all members of the Maratha community be issued Kunbi caste certificates immediately, thereby granting them direct access to state reservation benefits under the established OBC category quota.
