Political friction in West Bengal has intensified once again as Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the ruling dispensation, accusing BJP of intimidating political opponents and undermining constitutional rights. Responding to a controversial remark attributed to Suvendu Adhikari, Mamata took to the social media platform X to share a video clip, questioning where anyone gets the authority to decide whether a political leader can step out of their residence or not.
In the video shared by the TMC leader, Suvendu Adhikari is purportedly heard saying that there is no need for opposition figures to come onto the streets, and that he would personally ensure they are not allowed to set foot on any road. Reacting sharply to this, Mamata stated that the remark goes far beyond a personal attack, raising alarming questions regarding the state of democracy and the constitution.
Accusations of House Arrest and Political Harassment
Mamata Banerjee pointed out that a sitting Chief Minister takes a solemn oath to protect the constitution, yet the same individual talks about restricting the freedom of movement of a principal opposition party leader. She questioned the intent behind such declarations, asking whether this constituted a threat of house arrest, an attempt to instill fear, or outright political persecution.
The TMC chief demanded to know who in a constitutional democracy grants anyone the unilateral power to dictate who can move around freely and who cannot. She emphasized that citizens cannot be subjected to the whims of those holding executive authority.
Rejection of Retirement Rumors and Continued Political Fight
Addressing speculations regarding her political future amidst restrictions on public gatherings, Mamata firmly dismissed rumors that she might quit politics due to a lack of official permissions. During a live streaming session on Facebook, she made it clear that anyone assuming administrative hurdles would force her into retirement is gravely mistaken. She vowed that her political battle will continue relentlessly until BJP is politically retired.
Furthermore, Mamata alleged that the government has consistently denied permissions to hold political meetings. She claimed that within months of a regime change, the people of West Bengal have already seen through the true face of BJP and experienced state-sponsored intimidation.
Abhishek Banerjee Joins the Criticisms
Following Mamata Banerjee's remarks, TMC leader and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee also joined in criticizing BJP. He asserted that when individuals fail to earn genuine respect, they resort to creating an atmosphere of fear. Abhishek claimed that intimidation tactics employed by BJP are merely a reflection of their underlying insecurity. The ongoing war of words has heightened political hostilities in the state, with observers waiting for an official response from BJP.
