The crucial security assessment meeting was attended by top state bureaucrats and law enforcement officials, including Chief Secretary Sai Kumar, Home Secretary K. Manivasan, and Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, alongside other senior personnel. Together, they evaluated intelligence reports and specific security requirements tied to Stalin's daily movements and public engagements. Officials emphasized that this adjustment is a rationalization of security deployments rather than a complete withdrawal of protection. Despite the downgrade, Stalin will continue to receive substantial police protection during his travels and public appearances. The security revision follows a challenging political turnaround for Stalin and the DMK, coming months after the party faced a severe setback in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Having secured 133 seats to govern the state for a five-year term starting in 2021, the party's tally dropped significantly to 59 seats. Meanwhile, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay's party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam, emerged as the single largest force by winning 108 seats in the legislature.
Setback in Kolathur and Legal Challenge
The electoral blow was underscored by Stalin's defeat in Kolathur, his home turf and a constituency he had represented for three consecutive terms. Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam candidate V.S. Babu secured 82,997 votes, edging past Stalin, who received 74,202 votes, resulting in a margin of 8,795 votes in favor of Babu. Following this outcome, Stalin moved the Madras High Court to challenge the election result in that constituency.
Official Stance on the Security Review
Even after losing power and his assembly seat, Stalin remains the president of the DMK and one of the most prominent opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu. State officials reiterated that the security adjustment was strictly based on a professional threat assessment as part of routine periodic reviews. They maintained that the decision had no connection to political standing or recent electoral outcomes.
