In a major diplomatic push aimed at easing long-standing tensions along the border, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has traveled to Beijing to participate in high-level discussions. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for the 25th round of Special Representative talks between the two nations, with the primary objective centering on restoring stability along the Line of Actual Control and finding a peaceful resolution to the prolonged boundary dispute.
Key Agendas and Ground Realities
This high-level engagement is widely viewed as critical for addressing current friction points. Sources indicated that both representatives are expected to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the prevailing ground conditions along the LAC. The discussions will also involve reviewing the implementation of disengagement agreements reached in October 2024 and evaluating the subsequent steps taken to de-escalate military standoffs.
The talks take place against the backdrop of recent reports concerning aggressive maneuvers by Chinese troops in the Upper Subansiri region of Arunachal Pradesh. Consequently, a core emphasis of the dialogue will be placed on preserving peace and averting any fresh escalations across the entire 3,488-kilometer frontier, as both sides explore mutually acceptable frameworks to untangle the broad boundary dispute.
Restoring Patrol Rights and Post-Galwan Normalization
The representatives are set to deliberate on reinstating patrolling rights and reinforcing the gradual normalization process that commenced following the severe crisis in the Galwan Valley in 2020. Deliberations will also cover the expert group established under the WMCC framework, which has been tasked with initiating preliminary steps toward clarifying alignments in various sectors.
Doval and Wang are slated to discuss strengthening the overall border management architecture, including the existing Western Sector Mechanism alongside general-level mechanisms for the Eastern and Middle sectors. Furthermore, they will review the broader trajectory of bilateral ties and measures to reinforce the 2005 agreement concerning political parameters and guiding principles.
Diplomatic Momentum Ahead of the BRICS Summit
A significant underlying objective of these discussions is to foster a conducive environment ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s anticipated visit to India for the BRICS summit scheduled for September 12 to 13. While Beijing and New Delhi have yet to issue official confirmations regarding the Chinese leader's participation, officials on both sides remain optimistic about his arrival.
A successful visit could pave the way for a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the summit. The two leaders previously met in August 2025 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, making the current diplomatic outreach by the security chiefs all the more pivotal for bilateral stability.
