A fresh set of posters has appeared outside the Janata Dal United (JDU) office in Patna, reviving calls for former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Nitish Kumar to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour. The same posters also describe Health Minister Nishant Kumar as the "future leader of Bihar," a claim that has quickly become a talking point of its own.
What the posters say about Nitish Kumar
The posters hail Nitish Kumar's 20-year tenure as extraordinary, calling it a golden example of public service. One of the posters reads, "Nitish Sevak is asking... now the Bharat Ratna honour." The slogan signals that his supporters have long been hoping he would receive this recognition. This is not the first time such a demand has been raised; the issue has surfaced repeatedly in the past.
The Nishant Kumar angle drawing attention
Alongside the Bharat Ratna demand, the posters have drawn attention for another reason, their reference to the Chief Minister's son, Nishant Kumar. The posters directly describe him as the future leader of Bihar. One line on the posters states, "Nitish ji's mission is incomplete... Nishant Kumar will complete it." The framing suggests those behind the posters want Nishant Kumar to carry forward Nitish Kumar's unfinished work, a message being read closely for its political undertones.
The same demand was raised in January 2026
The call for a Bharat Ratna for Nitish Kumar is not new. In January 2026, senior JDU leader K.C. Tyagi wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi making the same demand. In his letter, Tyagi described Nitish Kumar as the last remaining precious gem of the socialist movement and said he deserved the Bharat Ratna. Tyagi also pointed to the honour previously given to Chaudhary Charan Singh and Karpoori Thakur, arguing that Nitish Kumar's contribution to social justice, farmers and marginalised sections also merits national recognition. He urged the Prime Minister to honour the sentiment of crores of people by conferring the award.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh has also backed the demand
Union Minister Giriraj Singh is among those who have publicly advocated for Nitish Kumar to receive the Bharat Ratna. In December 2024, he said Nitish Kumar's contribution to Bihar's development had been remarkable and that leaders like him deserved the country's highest honour. The latest posters in Patna, then, are not an isolated demand but the newest chapter in a debate that has been running for some time.
