Proceedings inside the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly turned contentious on Thursday as the DMK cornered the ruling TVK administration over the prevailing law and order situation in the state. In response to the intense political friction, Chief Minister Vijay rose from his seat and announced that he would address every single question raised by the opposition during the upcoming session on Monday.
Opposition Queries and Past Administration Record
During the assembly debate, Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin questioned the TVK administration over its repeated criticisms of the former DMK government's handling of the drug menace. He asked that if the previous measures were deemed inadequate, why the current government chose to promote two senior police officials who headed those exact departments during the DMK tenure. Stalin also pointed out an escalation in overall crime rates alongside a rise in cases registered under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. He emphasized that his administration had previously established special committees and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to assist victims and deliver timely justice.
Chief Minister Vijay Responds to the Accusations
After listening to the allegations leveled by the opposition, Vijay stood up, turned toward the Speaker, and stated that he would give clear and detailed replies to all the questions put forth by the honorable members when he returns on Monday. He added that even if he is not physically present at every moment, he remains fully updated on who is raising what query, assuring a thorough response to every point. Furthermore, through the Chair, he made a specific request to ensure that DMK members remain seated during his address and do not walk out of the house.
Protest Handling and Democratic Rights Controversy
Stalin leveled multiple accusations against the government concerning its approach toward managing democratic agitations and student protests. He criticized the administration for trying to suppress dissent and for alleged political interference, including the handling of anti-NEET demonstrations at Marina Beach. Highlighting the sequence of events, he noted that while they expected an immediate reply from the Chief Minister, the latter deferred his response to Monday.
