Standing up against local narcotics networks in rural Punjab continues to carry grave physical risks for ordinary citizens. Shortly after the killing of Parwinder Singh Jhota in the Mansa district sent shockwaves through the state, another violent tragedy has unfolded in the Shri Hargobindpur area. In Madi Pannwan village, three men who attempted to put an end to unlawful substance trafficking in their neighborhood were subjected to a ferocious attack with edged weapons. The confrontation claimed the life of 40-year-old Bikramjit Singh, while his two companions sustained severe trauma and remain under intense medical care. The brutal incident has triggered widespread grief and panic across the community.
Local Residents Objected to Harassment and Open Peddling
From his hospital bed, Gurmukh Singh recounted the troubling background that culminated in the bloodshed. He explained that a group of aggressive young men had turned their residential lane into an everyday hangout spot, making it extraordinarily uncomfortable and unsafe for daughters and women of the locality to walk down the street. According to him, the group engaged in unchecked drug distribution right outside homes. When the locals intervened on Wednesday and demanded an immediate stop to these illicit sales in their lane, the suspects retaliated furiously. Brandishing sharp weapons, they launched a ferocious assault on Bikramjit Singh, Nishan Singh, and Gurmukh Singh, cutting them down until all three collapsed onto the pavement covered in blood.
Ambush Carried Out by Group of 10 to 15 Assailants
Village sarpanch Surinderpal Singh Bajwa confirmed the sequence of events, stating that the victims had merely stepped forward to safeguard their village from narcotics abuse. According to the sarpanch, Nishan Singh, Gurmukh Singh, and Bikramjit Singh had approached the location specifically to halt illicit substance distribution. However, an armed mob of roughly 10 to 15 individuals lying in wait ambushed the trio, striking them repeatedly without mercy. Hearing the disturbance, neighboring villagers rushed to their rescue, scattered the attackers, and immediately transported the critically wounded men to the Community Health Centre in Bham for emergency medical attention.
Fatal Outcome at Bham Community Health Centre
Dr. Abhishek, attending physician at the Bham Community Health Centre, provided details regarding the condition of the incoming casualties. The victims brought to the facility were identified as Nishan Singh, aged 35, son of Amarjeet Singh; Gurmukh Singh, aged 35, son of Paramjit Singh; and Bikramjit Singh, aged 40, son of Tarsem Singh. Despite urgent intervention by the medical staff, Bikramjit Singh succumbed to his extensive injuries during treatment. Meanwhile, Nishan Singh and Gurmukh Singh continue to receive intensive care as their physical conditions remain critical.
Police Initiate Deep Probe into Dispute Motives
Following alerts regarding the bloody confrontation, personnel from the Shri Hargobindpur police station arrived at the scene promptly. Officers secured the vicinity, carried out a preliminary inspection, and commenced legal proceedings. Station House Officer Sukhjinder Singh stated that law enforcement has launched an in-depth investigation into all dimensions of the case. The SHO noted that investigators are examining the precise factors that triggered the dispute in order to conclusively establish the motive behind the murder, while simultaneously verifying the severe allegations leveled by the victims' families regarding illicit drug operations.
