A sharp political confrontation has surfaced in the Ludhiana East assembly segment of Punjab regarding the verification of electoral rolls. A photograph bearing a striking resemblance to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh was spotted alongside an elector's details, triggering swift questions from political figures over the overall accuracy of election documentation. Congress leaders turned the glitch into a broader critique of electoral administration, while local election authorities pushed back, labeling the controversy misleading and detailing their corrective steps.
Congress leadership raises flags over electoral entries
Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring highlighted the anomaly on the social media platform X, drawing attention to a record under Part 38, Serial Number 422 in Ludhiana East. Objecting strongly to the presence of Bhagat Singh's image in place of the citizen's actual photo, he wrote, “बस यही देखना बाकी रह गया था.” His remarks quickly amplified debates across state political circles regarding the diligence of field checks during official roll updates.
This objection follows allegations from Ludhiana Urban Congress president Sanjay Talwar, who claimed that eight other entries at that identical polling station also displayed incorrect photographs. Demanding an impartial and comprehensive review across all 235 polling stations in the constituency, Talwar emphasized that flawless electoral records remain indispensable for safeguarding eligible voters' rights and upholding public faith in democratic processes.
Broader political context and national scrutiny
The controversy emerged against the backdrop of wider complaints led by Congress figure Rahul Gandhi regarding alleged electoral irregularities in Haryana. Gandhi recently sought an appointment with the Chief Justice of India at the Supreme Court to raise concerns over voter rights, lapses during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and a call for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, though Gyanesh Kumar dismissed these demands. This heightened political climate added instant momentum to the developments in Ludhiana.
District administration explains timeline of correction
Addressing the escalating dispute, the office of the Ludhiana District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner issued a clarification, characterizing the political claims as misleading. Officials stated that the flawed image originated from an earlier electoral roll and had carried forward into the preliminary draft published on August 13, 2026. However, field verification under the Special Intensive Revision exercise detected the mismatch, enabling authorities to rectify the entry well before the controversy broke.
Administrative authorities noted that the finalized voter register containing the corrected photograph was scheduled for publication on October 12. Because the correction had already been processed through regular institutional checks, the administration maintained that portraying the draft anomaly as an active failure misrepresented the facts. Opposition representatives, however, continue to press for an extensive examination of all polling booths to guarantee absolute list credibility.
