Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched a sharp attack on Congress during a public address in Jaipur, throwing an open challenge to the opposition party regarding Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists and Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). Questioning the criticism surrounding the revision process, the minister asked whether voter list updates were occurring for the very first time since 1947. He pointed out that previous Congress governments had themselves undertaken SIR procedures multiple times during their decades in power, emphasizing that maintaining an accurate voter registry is essential for a robust democracy.
Debate Over Electoral Roll Revisions and Voter Registry Accuracy
Addressing the gathering, Ashwini Vaishnaw stressed that updating electoral rolls is a fundamental duty of the Election Commission of India. He explained that a clean voter list requires removing the names of deceased individuals, voters who have permanently relocated, and duplicate entries that create discrepancies in polling data. At the same time, enrolling newly eligible young voters is equally vital to keeping the democratic process inclusive and authentic. According to the Union Minister, the voter list serves as the primary foundation of democratic governance, and opposition to its purification lacks logical merit.
Critique of Opposition Tactics and Focus on Ground Politics
Taking a direct jab at opposition leaders, Vaishnaw remarked that posting messages on social media platforms does not constitute actual politics. He challenged Congress leaders to step onto the ground and engage directly with the public rather than restricting their campaign efforts to digital commentary. The minister stated that political battles must be fought among the electorate to earn genuine public trust. He further accused Congress of engaging in vote-bank politics during its 50 to 60 years of governance, contrasting it with the ruling party's core philosophy of prioritizing the nation above all else.
Defense of Electronic Voting Machines and Past Electoral Integrity
Responding to ongoing allegations regarding EVM reliability, the Union Railway Minister reminded critics about the origin of these machines in Indian elections. He highlighted that EVMs were originally introduced during Congress rule, questioning why the party now raises doubts over systems it brought into existence. Vaishnaw drew attention to the systemic irregularities and electoral malpractices that frequently marred elections prior to the introduction of EVMs. He noted that modern voting technology ensures that the leader chosen by the citizens gets the opportunity to serve the country transparently.
National Security, Anti-Naxal Initiatives, and Drive Against Drugs
Turning to national security, Vaishnaw highlighted the transformation in India's response to cross-border threats. He stated that any attempt at cross-border terrorism now receives a firm and decisive reply. Criticizing past policies, he attributed the rise and spread of Naxalism to the governance approach of Congress. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah with taking decisive steps that have effectively rooted out Naxalism across the country. Additionally, the minister announced an uncompromising campaign against illegal drugs, pledging that the government will eliminate drug networks and take stern action against anyone endangering the future of Indian youth.
Preserving Democratic Values and Legal Heritage
Highlighting the sacrifices behind India's democratic framework, Vaishnaw stated that thousands of martyrs have nurtured the nation's democracy with their blood, earning India a distinct global standing. He referred to Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and the Constitution of India, pointing out that while many nations struggling after independence failed to maintain democratic stability, India successfully preserved its constitutional structure. He accused Congress of attempting to weaken democratic institutions and appealed to party workers to remain united against anarchy while safeguarding democratic principles.
Local Outreach in Jaipur and Festive Considerations for Traders
With the festive season of Deepawali approaching, Vaishnaw addressed local civic concerns, urging campaign workers to ensure that commercial activities in Jaipur remain undisturbed. He requested that foot marches and rallies be conducted in a manner that avoids causing inconvenience to local shopkeepers, traders, and daily commuters. Identifying himself as a son of Rajasthan's soil, the minister reaffirmed his deep personal connection with Jaipur. He concluded by reiterating that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India stands strong on the global stage, dedicated to improving the lives of 140 crore citizens.
