A stunning visual of faith and grandeur has emerged from Bikaner, where a historic temple has been adorned not with the usual fragrant blossoms, but with real cash worth approximately 50 lakh rupees. This unique spiritual tribute at the Sati Mata Temple, situated in the Handi-Kundi area just outside Nathusar Gate, features fresh currency notes of various denominations. Curated by the Maa Sati Mata Bhakt Mandal, this spectacular transformation has become a major talking point in the region, with organizers claiming it is the first time in the history of Bikaner that a religious shrine has been decorated with such an immense sum of real paper currency. Devotees from all walks of life are flocking to the temple to witness this unprecedented sight.
Sacred Heritage and the Legacy of the Gar Gotra
Providing historical context to this sacred site, temple committee representative Manish Kumar Agarwal explained that this shrine holds deep significance as it houses the Kuldevi of the Gar gotra, a lineage belonging to the Agarwal community. According to traditional social structures, the Agarwal community is composed of 18 distinct gotras, among which the Gar gotra holds the esteemed title of Chaudhary. Local lore and community elders maintain that this very spot is where a mother committed sati following the demise of her son. Ever since that historical event, the location has remained the primary focal point of devotion and reverence for the entire community. The annual religious gatherings here witness massive participation from members of the Gar gotra and the wider Agarwal community, who arrive to seek blessings.
Traditional Devotional Festivities on Bhadrapada Amavasya
The unique decoration is part of a grand two-day religious festival organized on the auspicious occasion of Bhadrapada Amavasya. Following age-old customs, families belonging to the Gar gotra observe strict rituals during this period. Early in the morning, family members wake up to prepare traditional sweet offerings with great devotion. These delicacies include lapsee, malpua, and kesar peda, which are prepared entirely at home under hygienic and sacred conditions. Carrying these freshly prepared sweets alongside seasonal fruits, the devotees embark on a barefoot walk from their homes to the temple premises. Upon arrival, families perform elaborate rituals and participate in the congregational maha-arti, praying for peace and prosperity. The festival has generated immense enthusiasm, particularly among the youth and women of the community.
Artistry in Currency: A Splendid Display of Fresh Banknotes
The dedication of the Maa Sati Mata Bhakt Mandal members is visible in the meticulous arrangement of the currency notes. Instead of standard floral decorations, the entire sanctum sanctorum and the outer court have been draped in banknotes of various values, including notes of one rupee, two rupees, five rupees, ten rupees, fifty rupees, one hundred rupees, two hundred rupees, and five hundred rupees. Most of these notes are brand-new, crisp bundles obtained directly from banks. The colorful notes have been arranged in complex geometric and artistic patterns, giving the entire durbar a mesmerizing aesthetic look. Visitors entering the shrine are left spellbound by the creativity and are actively capturing the unique sight on their mobile phone cameras.
Community Funding and Rigorous Security Protocols
According to Manish Kumar Agarwal, the bhakt mandal had been harboring the desire to decorate the deity’s court with currency notes for the past two to three years. Typically, fresh flowers are sourced from Jaipur and Pushkar every year to adorn the temple. However, this year, the committee decided to execute this novel concept. The entire 50 lakh rupees utilized for the decoration was pooled together through mutual contributions from devotees and committee members. Since the money is a voluntary contribution, every single rupee will be returned safely to the respective donors once the two-day religious ceremonies conclude. Given the substantial volume of cash on public display, the temple administration has put in place highly stringent security arrangements and round-the-clock surveillance to ensure the safety of the venue.
