Devotees planning a pilgrimage to the globally famous Khatu Shyamji temple located in the Sikar district of Rajasthan need to adjust their travel itineraries. The temple management has announced a temporary closure of the deity's inner sanctum for a duration of approximately 19 hours. This decision has been communicated through an official notification issued by the Shri Shyam Mandir Committee to ensure that pilgrims are not inconvenienced and do not have to return empty-handed without catching a glimpse of their revered deity.
The Traditional Sacred Tilak Ritual and Special Prayers
According to the official statement released by the Shri Shyam Mandir Committee, the temporary suspension of public entry is required to carry out the highly sacred and traditional "tilak shringar" (ornamental forehead marking) along with special worship ceremonies of the deity, Baba Shyam. Providing deeper insights into this ancient practice, Ravi Singh Chauhan, the treasurer of the Shri Shyam Mandir Committee, explained that these ritualistic embellishments are a long-standing tradition of the temple and are performed periodically with strict adherence to Vedic guidelines. The entire process is time-consuming and requires absolute focus and purity, which is why the temple gates must remain shut to the public during this period.
Chauhan stated, "According to ancient traditions, Baba Shyam undergoes a special tilak shringar, a meticulous process requiring chanting of Vedic hymns."
The ritual involves applying a specially prepared sacred sandalwood paste onto the forehead of the idol situated within the sanctum sanctorum. While this secret and sacred ceremony takes place, continuous Vedic chants and prayers are performed by the high priests. Because of the confidential and highly sacred nature of these rituals, only the chief priests and selected official temple helpers are permitted to enter the sanctum sanctorum, making it necessary to restrict entry for all external visitors and general public during this time.
Specific Timings of Closure and Reopening for Public Darshan
To help devotees plan their visits without facing any hardships, the temple administration has shared the precise timeline of the closure. Ravi Singh Chauhan specified that the temple doors will be securely closed on the night of September 16 (Wednesday), immediately after the conclusion of the daily Shayan Aarti at 10:00 PM. Following this, the temple will remain completely inaccessible to all devotees throughout the entire day of September 17 (Thursday). During these hours, the elaborate ornamentation and secret prayers will be performed.
Once the extensive ritual of the tilak shringar is successfully completed, the doors of the sanctum sanctorum will be opened again for public viewing on September 17 (Thursday) starting at 4:30 PM, just in time for the evening Sandhya Aarti. Both the temple administration and the local police department have issued a joint appeal to all visiting pilgrims, requesting them to strictly follow these revised timings. They have urged devotees not to assemble or form queues outside the temple complex during the closure hours to prevent any chaos or inconvenience to their families.
