The BJP is marching towards a clean majority in the Jaipur Municipal Corporation elections, but the party has faced a significant setback with the unexpected defeat of its prominent candidate, Jyoti Khandelwal, from Ward number 110. Khandelwal, a highly recognized political figure in Jaipur, was widely expected to be the party's top choice for the coveted position of Mayor. Her sudden loss has effectively removed a major name from the list of top mayoral contenders, leading to widespread disappointment among her supporters.
A Look at Jyoti Khandelwal's Political Journey
To understand why this defeat is so significant, one must look at her extensive administrative experience and political background. Jyoti Khandelwal previously served as the Mayor of Jaipur from 2009 to 2014 representing the Congress party. In the 2009 elections, she achieved a historic milestone by defeating BJP's Suman Sharma in a direct mayoral contest, becoming the first female mayor of Jaipur city. Impressed by her performance and popularity, the Congress party gave her a ticket to contest the Jaipur Lok Sabha seat during the 2019 general elections, though she was unsuccessful in that national campaign. Later, in October 2023, she made a major political transition by leaving the Congress and joining the BJP. For the current municipal elections, the BJP nominated her as a councillor candidate from Ward 110, a seat specifically reserved for general category women.
Why the Defeat Came as a Major Shock
Khandelwal's five-year tenure as Jaipur's mayor provided her with substantial administrative expertise, which was her biggest advantage over other candidates. Being a former mayor, she possessed high name recognition across the city. Her active participation in party activities and her standing as a prominent female leader made her claim to the mayoral post exceptionally strong. The BJP leadership had anticipated an easy victory for her in Ward 110. However, the electorate chose a different path. Despite this individual setback, the BJP is on the verge of forming the local government in the 150-ward Jaipur Municipal Corporation. While the final stages of vote counting are still underway, the BJP has already crossed the threshold required for a majority.
Current Election Tally and Notable Wins
In the current seat distribution, the BJP has secured victories in 75 wards, putting it in a comfortable position to establish its board. On the other hand, the Congress party has lagged far behind, managing to win only 50 wards so far. Independent candidates have made a notable impact by winning 12 wards. Meanwhile, the official results for seven wards have been temporarily put on hold due to certain technical issues. The State Election Commission will formally announce the final results for these held-up wards in due course. Additionally, the election has thrown up interesting local dynamics, such as in the highly discussed Ward number 146, where Firoza Bano, a candidate backed by the AIMIM, emerged victorious. Her campaign had received high-profile support, with both Asaduddin Owaisi and Hanuman Beniwal holding public rallies to canvas for her.
