The political landscape of Alwar has become crystal clear following the official declaration of results for all 65 wards in the Rajasthan municipal elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured the position of the single largest party in this local body poll. However, since the party fell short of a clear majority, it will have to actively seek the support of victorious independent candidates to establish its board and govern the municipal corporation. Beyond the party-wise tallies, these elections have gained immense attention due to dramatic personal upsets, intriguing family dynamics, and unexpected turns of fortune.
The Final Seat Tally and Coalition Politics
Out of the total 65 wards contested, the BJP managed to secure victory in 28 seats, positioning itself at the top of the chart. The Congress party finished second, securing victories in 23 wards. The election also witnessed a strong performance by independent candidates, with 13 of them successfully winning their respective seats. Additionally, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) managed to win a single seat. With the total majority mark requiring more seats than what the leading parties achieved individually, the 13 independent councillors have effectively become the kingmakers in Alwar, forcing the BJP to negotiate for their backing to form the local government.
Spousal Defeat Versus Relative Victory: Family Ties in the Fray
The municipal polls threw up fascinating narratives of relationships within the political arena, showcasing contrasting fates for different families. In a double blow for one household, Suman Choudhary contesting from Ward 23 and Sitaram Choudhary contesting from Ward 28 both suffered defeats under the BJP banner. The two candidates are husband and wife, but neither could convince their respective electorates. On the other hand, the election brought joy to another family, as Shyam Sunder Yadav won from Ward 38 and Sunita Devi clinched victory in Ward 61 on BJP tickets. This winning duo, who share a family bond as in-laws (samdhi and samdhan), successfully made their way to the municipal board together.

Some prominent political families managed to retain their regional influence and continue their winning streaks. In Ward 20, Beena Gurjar, the daughter-in-law of former mayor Ghanshyam Gurjar, won her seat, ensuring that her family's long-standing political dominance remains intact. Meanwhile, in Ward 49, BJP candidate Ajay Poonia registered the most spectacular victory of the entire election by winning with the largest margin of votes. This victory marks Poonia's fifth consecutive win in the municipal polls. Prior to this election, he had successfully won four consecutive terms as an independent candidate, proving his immense grassroots popularity before repeating the feat on a BJP ticket.
Severe Blows to Political Heavyweights and Mayoral Contenders
The elections were not without major upsets, as several highly anticipated candidates faced shocking defeats. In Ward 32, BJP nominee Nilima Jain suffered a heavy loss. She is the wife of Dheeraj Jain, who was the party's previous chairperson candidate, making her defeat a significant psychological setback for the local unit. Similarly, in Ward 36, a major shockwave hit the Congress camp. Rinkal Garg, the sister-in-law of Deepak Garg, who is known as the closest aide of opposition leader Tikaram Jully, lost her electoral bid. Garg was widely projected as the leading contender for the prestigious mayoral post, but her unexpected defeat has upended the post-poll strategy of the opposition party.
