Demonstrating a remarkable medical feat, the neonatal intensive care unit of PBM Hospital in Bikaner has given a new lease of life to a premature infant born at just 29 weeks of gestation and weighing a mere 1.20 kilograms. During the course of treatment, the baby experienced critical moments at least five times when breathing and heart rates flatlined, but the dedicated doctors and nursing staff intervened swiftly with life-saving measures every single time. After spending nearly 20 days on a ventilator and battling a severe, drug-resistant infection, the newborn was discharged in a healthy condition on the 58th day of life.
Early Complications and Initial Care
The baby was born on July 7, 2026. At birth, the infant suffered from respiratory distress, requiring immediate oxygen support. Treatment was also administered for neonatal jaundice in the early days. Breastfeeding was initiated right after birth, and by the seventh day, the baby was tolerating maternal milk completely. The entire medical treatment was provided free of cost under the Mukhyamantri Ayushman Arogya Yojana. Doctors noted that the family's unwavering patience, trust, and cooperation played a pivotal role in the recovery. Surviving five life-threatening episodes, prolonged mechanical ventilation, and severe infection to return home healthy stands as a monumental achievement for the NICU team at PBM Hospital and modern neonatal medicine.
Battling Five Life-Threatening Episodes
A critical crisis unfolded on July 28 when the infant's health deteriorated abruptly. As breathing and heart functions paused, physicians immediately initiated CPR and placed the baby back on a ventilator. Such alarming emergencies arose at least five times throughout the hospitalization, yet prompt interventions by the NICU crew averted tragedy on every occasion. Initially, the infant remained on mechanical ventilation continuously for 14 days. A subsequent relapse in breathing difficulties necessitated a second stint on the ventilator. Finally, on August 25, the baby was successfully extubated. Following a brief period of supplemental oxygen, the infant breathed spontaneously without any external assistance.
Overcoming Drug-Resistant Infections and Complications
The clinical journey grew more arduous as the infant contracted a severe and resilient infection. Laboratory cultures detected the presence of the MDR Klebsiella bacterium, which proved immune to several standard antibiotic medications. Guided by sensitivity reports, the medical team altered the therapeutic regimen and pressed on. Compounding matters further, the infant suffered from pulmonary hemorrhage, thrombocytopenia, and hypokalemia during the hospital stay. Blood products and vital components were transfused as clinically required. Once stabilization was achieved, the baby was provided with Kangaroo Mother Care to facilitate skin-to-skin contact, enabling the infant to resume unassisted feeding.
Discharge and Health Milestones
At the time of discharge, the infant's weight had increased to 1.55 kilograms. The baby's length expanded from 41 to 44 centimeters, and the head circumference grew from 26 to 29 centimeters. The newborn was breathing comfortably in ambient air and feeding independently. While ophthalmological examinations yielded normal results, a BERA test was recommended for a detailed assessment of auditory functions. The family received comprehensive guidelines regarding routine check-ups and ongoing medical follow-ups.
