In the border district of Barmer, the festival of Raksha Bandhan was celebrated with an inspiring and environmentally conscious approach. Traditionally known as a celebration of love, trust, and protection between siblings, the festival took on a broader social dimension this year. At Modern School, students expanded the scope of sacred promises beyond family ties by linking the traditional ritual of tying protective threads to environmental conservation and academic responsibility.
Sacred Threads Tied to Trees as Environmental Companions
The unique celebration saw active participation from students across classes 9th to 12th. Sisters tied traditional rakhis to their brothers' wrists while exchanging solemn promises to support one another and uphold their commitments throughout life. Following this, the students proceeded to tie sacred protection threads around the trunks and branches of trees and plants within the school premises, symbolically accepting nature as a lifelong companion worthy of care and protection.
Explaining the thought behind the initiative, Harshita, a student at Modern School, shared that tying protective threads to plants represents a commitment to nature. She highlighted that just as a brother promises to protect his sister from harm, humans must take full responsibility for defending trees and preserving green cover. According to her, safeguarding the environment is an essential obligation that every individual must fulfill for a sustainable future.
Academic Excellence and Discipline Pledged to Teachers
In addition to environmental conservation, the celebration embraced a strong educational focus. Students utilized the occasion to make meaningful pledges to their teachers regarding their personal growth and school environment. They promised to dedicate themselves to their studies, aim for top academic positions in their respective classes, adhere strictly to school discipline, and actively participate in ecological preservation activities.
Elaborating on these pledges, student Aditi Khatri stated that the initiative served a dual purpose. While the rakhis bound around brothers' wrists reinforced family values and trust, the threads tied to plants served as a constant reminder of ecological duty. Furthermore, the promises made to educators motivated students to excel academically and maintain high standards of conduct within the classroom.
