In Hindu traditions, the sacred month of Shravan is highly anticipated, yet the days leading up to it, specifically the final Ekadashi of the Ashadh month, hold profound spiritual weight. This particular day marks the official beginning of Chaturmas. According to Acharya Anand Bhardwaj from Ujjain, the Chaturmas period for the year 2026 is scheduled to commence on July 25. This four-month interval is considered a highly significant season for devotion and introspection, where the focus shifts away from mundane auspicious activities toward spiritual discipline.
The Timeline of Chaturmas
As per the Vedic calendar, Chaturmas begins on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi during the Shukla Paksha of the Ashadh month. In 2026, the fast for Devshayani Ekadashi will be observed on Saturday, July 25. On this day, Lord Vishnu enters into a state of 'Yognidra,' or cosmic sleep, signaling the start of the Chaturmas period. This cycle concludes on Devutthana Ekadashi, which falls in the Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month. This year, Devutthana Ekadashi will take place on November 20, 2026, meaning the entire duration of Chaturmas will span from July 25 to November 20, 2026.
Astrological Significance
From the perspective of astrology, the celestial movements during Chaturmas are crucial. Throughout these four months, the planet Venus, which governs domestic happiness and marriage, and the planet Jupiter, which signifies wisdom, religion, and auspiciousness, remain in a combust state. Because these vital planets are not in a position to exert their full influence, astrological experts advise against performing social ceremonies like weddings, housewarmings, or other major life milestones during this period.
Mythological Context of Yognidra
The transition of Lord Vishnu into his cosmic sleep is deeply rooted in mythology. On Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu departs for the Patal Lok. This departure is attributed to a promise he made to his great devotee, the demon king Bali. Vishnu had promised Bali that he would reside in the Patal Lok for four months to serve him. Consequently, Lord Vishnu remains in the Patal Lok until Devutthana Ekadashi, and it is only after he awakens that the season for traditional auspicious ceremonies resumes.
Purpose and Spiritual Benefits
Acharya Anand Bhardwaj explains that the concept of Chaturmas was originally established by Goddess Lakshmi. The primary objective is to alleviate the hardship Lord Vishnu faces while acting as a gatekeeper for King Bali. During these four months, devotees are encouraged to engage in religious rituals, acts of charity, listening to scriptures, bhajan singing, and intensive self-improvement. By dedicating oneself to these spiritual practices, devotees hope to soothe the divine, encouraging Lord Vishnu to return to Vaikuntha. This phase serves as an ideal time for individuals to focus on inner development and spiritual growth.
