At the foothills of the Vindhyachal range in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh, the Ashapur Dham temple is drawing large crowds as Gupt Navratri begins. Devotees regard this ancient shrine of Maa Ashapuri as more than just another Shaktipeeth, since local belief ties it directly to the era of the Mahabharata. According to tradition, it was here that Arjun, one of the Pandava brothers, performed penance and received the goddess's blessing, a story that continues to pull thousands of pilgrims to the site every year.
Crowds Building Since Early Morning
Since Gupt Navratri began, the temple complex has been filling with worshippers from first light. Visitors are arriving not only from across Madhya Pradesh but from several neighbouring states as well, many waiting in long queues for their turn at darshan. Special puja, abhishek and shringar ceremonies are being held through the day alongside a series of religious rituals, giving the entire complex a devotional atmosphere.
From Flag Worship to the Navchandi Yagya
According to the priests, this year's Gupt Navratri opened with dhwaj pujan, the setting up of the mandap, ghat sthapna and a special abhishek. Right after these rites, a Navchandi Yagya was launched, and it now runs every single day from 8:30 am until the evening aarti at 5 pm. Large numbers of devotees are taking part in the yagya daily to seek the goddess's blessings.
A History Tracing Back to the Dwapar Era
Trilok Yadav, who is associated with the temple trust, says the shrine in Ashapur village is hundreds of years old and forms a central part of the region's cultural identity. Tradition holds that Maa Ashapuri has resided here since the Dwapar Yuga, though in the earliest period she was worshipped inside a small cave. The temple's first major renovation took place roughly 800 years ago, in the 12th century, while a grand reconstruction was carried out in 2012 with the cooperation of local villagers. That rebuilding is what turned it into one of the region's most prominent religious centres.
Arjun's Penance and the Pandava Connection
Popular legend holds that during the Mahabharata period, Arjun undertook intense penance at this very spot and secured a blessing of victory in battle from Maa Ashapuri, which is why the temple is counted among sites linked to the Pandavas. Stories also circulate locally that the warriors Alha and Udal once performed penance here. Devotees firmly believe that anyone who visits the goddess's court with a sincere heart has their wishes fulfilled.
Worshipped as the Family Deity of Royal Lineages
Maa Ashapuri is also regarded as the kuldevi, or family deity, of the lineages of Raja Mandhata and Prithviraj Chauhan, and descendants of these royal families still travel here periodically for darshan and worship. Beyond that, families belonging to numerous gotras across Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan also consider Maa Ashapuri their kuldevi. That is why, before any auspicious family occasion such as a wedding, these families make it a point to come here first to seek her blessings.
