The safety of the valuables inside the temple vault was a prominent political issue during the 2004 state assembly elections, where political parties raised questions regarding the protection of the stored riches. Following political shifts in the state, the secret chambers of the treasury were opened on July 14, 2024, after a gap of roughly 46 years. These chambers were unlocked specifically to undertake necessary repair work, renovation, and to draft a comprehensive inventory of the precious items housed inside.
Inventory process resumes following decades-long gap
According to temple administrators, the third phase of the inventory compilation process resumed on Monday, following a gap of nearly 48 years since the last major audit. Arvind Paढ़ी, the chief administrator of the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration, explained that the entire procedure is being conducted under standard operating procedures established by the state government, using the 1978 inventory document as the baseline. He emphasized that strict adherence to transparency and precision is being maintained throughout the ongoing work.
