The Legend of Ravi Pradosh Vrat
According to the traditional story associated with the Ravi Pradosh Vrat, there once lived a very impoverished Brahmin and his family. The Brahmin's wife observed the Pradosh Vrat with strict devotion and regular rituals. They had a son who, one day, set out for a ritual bath in the Ganges. Unfortunately, he was intercepted by a group of thieves on the path. Instead of harming him, the thieves demanded to know the location of his father's wealth in exchange for his life. The boy, in a state of humble distress, explained that they were so poor that they possessed no wealth or assets at all. When the thieves questioned him about what was tied in his bundle, he simply stated that it contained bread provided by his mother for the journey.
Moved by the boy's sincerity and extreme poverty, the thieves let him go. He continued his journey until he reached a city, where he sat down to rest under a Banyan tree. Exhausted, he soon fell into a deep sleep. Coincidentally, soldiers from the city were searching for the very thieves he had encountered, and upon finding the boy, they mistook him for one of the criminals and took him into custody. The King ordered that the boy be imprisoned immediately. Meanwhile, when the boy failed to return home, his parents were overcome with anxiety. The next day happened to be the mother's Pradosh Vrat, which she observed diligently while praying to Lord Shiva for her son's safety.
That night, Lord Shiva appeared in the King's dream, warning him that the boy in the dungeon was innocent. Shiva commanded the King to release him by morning, or else his entire kingdom and fortune would be destroyed. Upon waking, the terrified King immediately ordered the boy's release. The boy recounted his entire ordeal to the King, who then ordered the boy's parents to be brought to the royal court. Although the Brahmin couple was initially frightened, the King reassured them, acknowledging that their son was innocent. To compensate for their hardship, the King donated 5 villages to the Brahmin, ensuring they could live the rest of their lives in comfort and prosperity. Thus, all the troubles in the Brahmin's life were resolved. Whoever observes the Ravi Pradosh Vrat with faith is believed to be blessed with a happy life, excellent health, and lasting prosperity.
