Almost every Indian household has heard an elder say the same thing: don't drink water standing up, sit down first. That instruction is not just a family quirk, it comes from a centuries-old religious and cultural belief that treats water not as an ordinary liquid but as a sacred, life-sustaining element.
Where the idea of water as sacred comes from
In Sanatan tradition, water is treated as the core element that sustains life itself. Scriptures lay out rules for everyday conduct meant to keep discipline and propriety in daily living, and the manner of drinking water is considered part of that same framework. These beliefs around drinking water have been carried forward across generations.
The tradition of drinking water seated and calm
According to these beliefs, one should not rush while drinking water. Tradition holds that water should be consumed while seated, calmly and with respect. Drinking water while standing has, in some traditions, been linked to disrespect toward water and food. It is also said that a calm state of mind while drinking water keeps the mind steady, while drinking in haste disturbs that steadiness.
The link between the water element and bodily balance in astrology
In astrology and traditional belief systems, water is counted among the important elements of the body and nature. It is believed that drinking water while seated and with restraint keeps the water element balanced within the body. Drinking water quickly while standing, on the other hand, is said to bring restlessness into one's body and temperament. This is why families encourage children to develop the habit of sitting down to drink water from an early age.
Where Ayurveda and science take different views
Ayurvedic tradition, too, emphasises restraint and ease while drinking water. However, claims that drinking water while standing directly damages the kidneys, joints or intestines are not established by modern scientific evidence. Experts therefore suggest these should be understood as traditional beliefs rather than medical facts.
The right way to drink water
Both tradition and general advice agree that sitting comfortably and taking slow sips of water is considered a good habit. From a religious standpoint too, the practice of drinking water with respect and a calm mind is given considerable importance.
