The Indian men's hockey team delivered a dominant performance on home soil to reaffirm its supremacy across the continent. In the title clash of the Asian Champions Trophy held in Punjab, India secured a resounding 4-1 victory against Japan. With this stellar triumph, the defending champions claimed the prestigious tournament trophy for a record sixth time. Right from the opening whistle, Indian players deployed an aggressive strategy that completely dismantled the Japanese defense and sealed the championship.
Strong Comeback After Early Japanese Lead
The match began with an early advantage for Japan, raising the stakes of the contest. Kazumasa Matsumoto struck a goal in the third minute to put Japan ahead 1-0, placing early pressure on the home side. However, the Indian players responded with remarkable composure and aggression. Shilanand Lakra leveled the score in the 42nd minute. Subsequently, Dilpreet Singh scored in the 48th minute, followed by goals from Jugraj Singh in the 53rd minute and Vivek Sagar Prasad in the 54th minute to seal the win. India had previously defeated Japan by the exact same 4-1 margin during the round-robin league stage.
An Undefeated Campaign Under Craig Fulton
Guided by head coach Craig Fulton, the Indian squad remained undefeated throughout the entire tournament to emerge as champions. The team triumphed in all five of their matches during the league phase. In the semi-finals, India routed South Korea with an 8-1 margin to book their spot in the final. Meanwhile, Japan advanced to the title clash after securing a 5-3 victory in a penalty shootout following a draw against Malaysia in the second semi-final.
Milestone Performance by Vice-Captain Hardik Singh
Playing in his 200th international match, vice-captain Hardik Singh anchored the midfield brilliantly. He maintained seamless coordination between the defensive and attacking lines to generate numerous scoring opportunities. Concurrently, Germanpreet Singh stood like a rock in the defensive line to neutralize Japanese attacks. Although Japan earned two consecutive penalty corners in the 20th minute, the Indian defense successfully thwarted the efforts of Japanese captain Raiki Fujishima. India trailed 0-1 at the end of the first half but returned with renewed determination.
A Fourth-Quarter Attacking Storm From India
Following the halftime break, the Indian team stepped onto the turf with completely transformed intent. Although a 33rd-minute penalty corner was saved by Japanese goalkeeper Kisho Kuroda, and a Japanese penalty corner in the 39th minute went in vain, India sustained relentless pressure. Shilanand Lakra capitalized on a rebound from Aditya Arjun Lalage's pass in the 42nd minute to equalize at 1-1. During the final quarter, India completely took control. Dilpreet Singh scored with a reverse hit in the 48th minute off a setup by Hardik Singh to make it 2-1. Jugraj Singh then converted a penalty corner with a powerful drag-flick to extend the lead to 3-1, before Vivek Sagar Prasad struck from the top of the circle to make it 4-1. Japan missed a final penalty corner seconds before the buzzer, confirming the gold medal for India.
