Italian racing talent Kimi Antonelli made motorsport history at the Mexico Grand Prix, securing the Formula One world championship at merely 20 years of age. Competing for Mercedes, Antonelli crossed the finish line in third position behind race winner Max Verstappen and runner-up Lewis Hamilton. That podium spot delivered every point necessary to guarantee the season title, prompting jubilant celebrations from the young driver immediately upon completing the contest in Mexico City.
Shattering the Youngest Champion Record
While Verstappen took top honors on the podium and Hamilton secured second place, Antonelli held firm in third to secure the mathematical advantage required for the drivers' crown. Reaching the pinnacle of motorsport at age 20 allowed Antonelli to rewrite the record books, surpassing the benchmark set by Sebastian Vettel. The German driver had held the honor of being the youngest world champion since 2010, when he claimed the championship at 23 years of age.
Celebrations with Family in Mexico City
Reflecting on the monumental triumph, Antonelli expressed the surreal nature of the moment. Antonelli said, "I'm trying to understand what just happened. When you work so hard and finally achieve it, it is really very special." The historic milestone was made sweeter by the presence of his parents and younger sister, who witnessed the triumph firsthand at the circuit. Antonelli said, "Emotions are running high," adding that witnessing this milestone alongside his family created a memory he would cherish forever.
Unassailable Points Cushion With Four Rounds Remaining
Antonelli elevated his season total to 380 points in the championship standings following the race in Mexico City. With a sizable cushion established, the title has been locked away despite four races still remaining on the racing calendar. Verstappen currently occupies second place in the standings with 261 points, while Hamilton sits just behind in third with 259 points. Even if either Verstappen or Hamilton manages a clean sweep across the final four events, neither driver can mathematically overtake Antonelli's tally of 380 points.
