Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu kicked off her campaign at the World Badminton Championships in style, securing a dominant straight-game victory over Ireland's Sophia Noble in the opening round of the women's singles event. Seeded ninth in the tournament, the Indian star easily brushed aside the challenge from Noble with a scoreline of 21-7, 21-11 to secure her spot in the second round.
A Swift Victory in Just 29 Minutes
Sindhu, a five-time World Championships medalist, wrapped up the match in a mere 29 minutes. She took control of the contest right from the start, utilizing her vast experience and patient gameplay to keep Noble under constant pressure. Sindhu built a commanding 11-2 lead by the interval in the first game before comfortably closing it out.
Holding Ground in the Second Game
Noble put up a better fight in the second game and briefly threatened to challenge the Indian star, but the veteran used her tactical acumen to edge ahead 11-8 by the break. Sindhu never allowed her opponent any room for a comeback thereafter.
Closing Out With Precision Shots
Displaying a mix of brilliant drop shots and powerful smashes, Sindhu maintained a firm grip on the proceedings and wrapped up the match with a deft backhand drop near the net. Sindhu currently holds one gold, two silvers, and two bronze medals at the World Championships, having famously clinched the gold in 2019. Reaching the semifinals of the current tournament will guarantee her at least a bronze medal, making her the first player in history to win six medals at the World Championships. Only two other players have previously secured five medals at the global event.
Upcoming Clash Against Beiwen Zhang
Legendary Chinese male shuttler Lin Dan won all five of his medals as golds, while his compatriot Zhao Yunlei claimed three titles in mixed doubles and two in women's doubles. Moving forward in the tournament, Sindhu will face Canada's Beiwen Zhang in the next round. Zhang advanced by defeating Bulgaria's Stefani Stoeva 21-7, 21-19 in her opening match.
Strong Start for Other Indian Pairs
In women's doubles, Commonwealth Games bronze medalists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand began their campaign with an easy 21-9, 21-13 victory over Spain's Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez. The Indian duo will next face 16th-seeded American pair Lauren Lam and Allison Lee. Meanwhile, Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun became the first Indian men's doubles pair to take the court in the tournament, advancing to the second round when their opponents Scott Guildea and Paul Reynolds retired after trailing 16-21, 4-6.
Next Challenges Ahead for Indian Duos
Hariharan and Arjun will next square off against South Korea's 15th-seeded pair Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae, who received a first-round bye. India's fifth-seeded star men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also received a first-round bye and will face Scotland's Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle in the second round.
