When Factory Hours Could Not Keep the Family Going
Surendra Ram from Garkha block in Bihar's Chhapra district followed what seemed like a sensible path. He completed his graduation, then left his village to find employment. He worked in factories in Punjab and Delhi, clocking in long hours regularly. But despite the sustained effort, the money coming in was never quite enough to meet his family's needs. The cities he had moved to for opportunity were not delivering on their promise.
The Decision to Come Home Turned Everything Around
Instead of continuing to struggle in underpaid factory work far from home, Surendra Ram chose to return to his village and make farming his livelihood. That single decision proved to be the turning point of his life. Today he ranks among the farmers in Chhapra district who are earning well through vegetable cultivation. His farm income now takes care of the household's day-to-day expenses and funds his children's education without strain.
One Acre, the Semrij Variety, and Roughly 5 Quintals a Day
Speaking to TrendKia, Surendra Ram said he is currently cultivating the Semrij variety of okra across one acre of land. This particular variety has been delivering strong yields. Every day he harvests approximately 5 quintals of okra and sells it in the local market, which translates into earnings of more than Rs 3,000 per day. In addition to okra, he has also planted brinjal, chilli, nenua (ridge gourd), and bottle gourd on his farm, giving him several vegetable income streams from the same piece of land.
Three to Four Hours in the Field, Income Every Single Day
Surendra Ram keeps his daily routine simple. He works in his field for 3 to 4 hours each day, picks the okra, and gets it to market consistently. He draws a direct comparison that sums up his philosophy: working 4 to 5 hours on your own farm beats spending 8 hours in a factory, because the farm generates more income. Cash crops consistently outperform traditional crops in terms of profit, and okra sits at the top of that list for him.
A Shift That Is Spreading Across Saran District
What Surendra Ram has built for himself is part of a wider movement taking shape in Saran district. Farmers across several areas of the district are adopting vegetable cultivation on a large scale, moving away from traditional crops and toward cash crops that deliver steadier and higher returns. The trend is gaining momentum as more farmers see the income difference for themselves.
Why Okra Stands Out as the Crop to Grow
Among vegetables that offer high returns at low cost, Surendra Ram places okra at the very top. The crop can be grown throughout the year, so farmers always have an earning opportunity no matter the season. Because okra is picked daily rather than once at harvest, money comes in every single day rather than in a lump sum at the end of a season. His advice to fellow farmers is clear: scale up okra cultivation and the jump in income will be substantial.
