How a Tiny Kota Shop Wove a Three-Generation Story of Success With Just a Needle and Thread

A clothing alteration shop in Kota, Rajasthan that began with only ₹3,000 has grown into four outlets supporting around 15 families, with the family's third generation now picking up the scissors and measuring tape.

A little shop that once operated under a simple sheet has today become one of Kota's most trusted names. In this bustling coaching hub of Rajasthan, where fresh brands crowd the market almost every day, there is a place in Gumanpura that has won the whole city's faith on the strength of one skill, giving clothes their perfect fit. Its name is Janta Alteration, and its journey is a rare tale of hard work and trust stitched together with a needle and thread. The family's third generation now handles the scissors and measuring tape at the very same shop.

Sabir Hussain, who runs the shop, says the foundation of this journey was laid roughly 45 years ago by his father. Back then, most people in Kota were not even fully familiar with the word 'alteration.' For them it meant little more than shortening the length of a pair of trousers or fixing a loose stitch. It was this shop that taught the entire city the finer points of correct measurements and fashion sense. The family's elders had tried several other kinds of business before, but real prosperity came to them only in this tailoring line.

The beginning was extremely tough. A small shop was rented, and the foundation of the work was laid by paying just ₹3,000 as a security deposit in those days. That modest sum has now grown into a genuine example for others.

Four Brothers' Toil and the Next Generation's Entry

Time changed and Kota rose to become one of the country's biggest coaching hubs, yet people's trust in Janta Alteration never wavered. The eldest brother in the family is Shakir Hussain, followed by the younger Iqbal Hussain. The two built up the work by pouring day and night into it. Now Sabir Hussain and his younger brother are carrying the legacy forward. The most beautiful turn in the story is that the third generation has already made a strong entry into the shop. Sabir Hussain's nephew too has thrown himself into making this ancestral trade more modern and larger in scale.

From Three Craftsmen to Fifteen Families

Sabir Hussain says, "When the work began 45 years ago, we had only 3 craftsmen. But today more than 10 permanent craftsmen work with us. Some of them have been attached to us like family for the last 15 to 20 years." The start may have been from a single shop, but today they have 4 shops, three of which are rented. Thanks to sheer hard work, this trade now feeds not just one family but the families of 14 to 15 other craftsmen who work at the shop.

A Hundred Customers a Day and Satisfaction as the Real Strength

On an average day, more than 100 customers come to this shop to get the fit of their clothes set right. Recalling the old days, Sabir Hussain says that even back then the work earned enough to run the household comfortably, and today too the full reward of their effort keeps coming in. According to him, the unshakeable trust of customers and the happiness on their faces is their biggest USP. The tiny seed sown 45 years ago has now grown into a banyan tree, whose strong bond of needle and thread has made all of Kota its devoted admirer.

What this means for you

  • Across India: The story shows how even tiny capital and a single skill, backed by years of hard work, can build a durable business and a livelihood for many families.
  • In Kota: This Gumanpura shop gives local residents a trusted alteration service and provides work to 14 to 15 craftsmen's families.

Inspiration & Lessons

This family's journey offers a few simple but powerful lessons:

  • Stick to one craft: After trying several businesses, the elders chose tailoring and stayed deeply committed to it, building both trust and mastery.
  • Don't fear a small start: A venture that began with just a ₹3,000 deposit and three craftsmen now runs across four shops.
  • Put customer satisfaction at the centre: Treating the happiness on a customer's face, rather than earnings alone, as their biggest strength became their identity.
  • Treat workers like family: Bonds with craftsmen who have stayed for 15 to 20 years gave the business real stability.
  • Pass the skill down generations: Bringing the next generation into the work kept the door open to modernise and expand the legacy.
