Elisiba, hailing from Jashpur district in Chhattisgarh, has set a shining example by clinching both a Gold and a Bronze medal across two national basketball competitions. As the daughter of a daily wage mason, her journey demonstrates that talent from remote regions can excel on national stages when backed by determination and family support.
From Schoolyard Interest to National Courts
Currently studying in Class 12, Elisiba first stepped onto a basketball court four to five years ago. Her introduction to the sport took place at school, where she initially played merely for recreation. Over time, what began as a simple extracurricular activity evolved into a core passion of her life. Her dedication steadily deepened, motivating her to pursue basketball with serious athletic ambition.
Balancing Academics with Intense Daily Practice
Firmly believing that academics and sports are equally vital for personal growth, Elisiba maintains a disciplined daily schedule. Every evening from 4 PM to 7 PM, she engages in grueling three hour training sessions on the court. Despite experiencing physical exhaustion after these demanding workouts, she consistently carves out dedicated time for her school studies, proving that academic goals do not need to be compromised for athletic success.
Medal Victories in Rajnandgaon Championships
Elisiba's rigorous practice routine paid off during national level competitions. She has represented her region twice in national basketball tournaments, both of which took place in Rajnandgaon. Displaying exceptional athletic performance, she earned a Gold medal in one championship and secured a Bronze medal in the other, establishing herself as a promising young player.
Overcoming Family Hesitation through Proven Merit
Her father, Bilyasus Tirkey, works as a mason, while her mother manages the household as a homemaker. Although the family operated on modest financial resources, her parents prioritized her athletic aspirations. Initially, when Elisiba started traveling for out of town tournaments, her father felt apprehensive about late hours and travel safety. However, as she returned home decorated with national medals, her family's trust grew significantly. Today, her parents offer unreserved encouragement and allow her to travel anywhere required for her sport.
Inspiring Rural Youth Despite Facility Gaps
While Elisiba originates from Jashpur, she completed her schooling in Ambikapur. Reflecting on her origins, she pointed out that her home district of Jashpur lacks the modern sports infrastructure and proper basketball courts found in major urban centers. Nevertheless, she emphasizes that young individuals in rural and remote pockets possess tremendous natural talent and resilience, capable of competing with the best when given the opportunity.
