A determined young entrepreneur from Bihar has scripted an extraordinary success story in modern agriculture. Upendra Kushwaha, a 32-year-old resident of Nautan in West Champaran, has earned the well-deserved title of Mushroom King in his region. Starting with a modest investment of approximately Rs 2.50 lakh just five years ago, Kushwaha has scaled his button mushroom enterprise into a thriving business that now generates an annual turnover exceeding Rs 2 crore. His journey from an unemployed graduate to a successful agri-preneur serves as an inspiration for many.
Overcoming Pandemic Setbacks and Starting Small
After completing his Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Kushwaha returned to his hometown with dreams of securing employment elsewhere. However, the sudden onset of the Covid 19 pandemic in late 2019 shattered his plans of moving away for work. Instead of giving up, he decided to utilize his educational background to establish a local business. He chose mushroom cultivation, a venture that promised quick returns if managed correctly.
Before launching his enterprise, Kushwaha undertook formal training in mushroom cultivation to understand the technical nuances of the process. He began his journey in a small thatched hut, setting up just 50 bags of mushroom compost. This initial setup required an investment of about Rs 2.50 lakh. Since button mushrooms begin to fruit within 45 days of setup, Kushwaha began to see the financial viability of his efforts within the first two to three months, giving him the confidence to scale up.
The Road to Expansion and Modernization
Seeing clear profitability, Kushwaha gradually phased out his temporary thatched hut and transitioned to concrete farming units. As his business grew and the turnover reached Rs 50 lakh, he expanded his operations significantly. He did not limit himself to selling mushrooms; he also began manufacturing spawn bags, also known as mushroom kits. By ensuring superior product quality and a consistent supply, he quickly won the trust of mushroom traders across the district, which dramatically boosted his revenue.
Today, with over five years of experience under his belt, Kushwaha runs a highly sophisticated agricultural operation. He has constructed eight modern cultivation units, which collectively hold up to 1,800 mushroom bags. Every single 45-day crop cycle yields a massive harvest of approximately 12 tons of fresh mushrooms. Kushwaha's distribution network has also expanded beyond local boundaries. He now supplies high-quality mushrooms to several districts across Bihar, as well as to neighboring states including Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
