A striking display of grit and resolve emerged from Jharkhand's Ramgarh district, where rural women appeared for Home Guard recruitment trials wearing traditional sarees due to a lack of proper athletic gear. Hailing from the remote village of Budha Khukhra in the Ramgarh block, these candidates braved severe financial constraints to prove their fitness on the track, completing their physical test well ahead of the qualifying deadline.
Clocking 1600 Meters in 7 Minutes at Sidhu Kanhu Stadium
The recruitment drive was held at the Sidhu Kanhu District Ground in Ramgarh, where candidates arrived to undergo mandatory physical evaluation. Among the applicants were 36-year-old Sunita Devi and 28-year-old Jageshwari Kumari. Coming from low-income agricultural backgrounds, neither woman had the money to purchase a sports tracksuit or running attire. Consequently, they chose to run the grueling 1,600-meter race in their everyday sarees.
Under the physical trial benchmarks for Home Guard selection, aspirants are required to finish the 1,600-meter run within an 8-minute window. Despite the challenge of running in sarees, Sunita Devi and Jageshwari Kumari completed the entire distance in approximately 7 minutes. Their ability to cross the finish line roughly a minute faster than the required cutoff drew widespread attention and praise across social media platforms.
Early Dawn Training Sessions Amid Financial Hardship
Explaining their preparation, Sunita Devi and Jageshwari Kumari pointed out that their families survive primarily through farming. Weak household finances make it difficult to afford specialized clothing or running accessories. Rather than letting the lack of resources stall their aspirations, they adapted to what they had and trained in traditional attire.
Both women step out of their homes every morning around 4 am to run and build stamina. Several other women and young girls from Budha Khukhra are also preparing for the recruitment drive alongside them. Faced with identical monetary hardships, this group continues their physical conditioning in sarees every dawn, demonstrating sheer dedication toward securing employment.
Recruitment Underway for 284 Home Guard Vacancies
The district administration is conducting the physical selection process to fill 284 vacant Home Guard posts across Ramgarh district, with the recruitment timeline noted to commence from October 24. For these rural candidates, clearing the test represents a critical pathway toward financial security and stable government employment despite everyday adversity.
