Students at Jabalpur Engineering College, the oldest engineering institution in Madhya Pradesh, have demonstrated notable automotive engineering skills by constructing a high-speed racing machine on a modest budget. The mechanical engineering cohort utilized the engine of a second-hand Pulsar 150 motorcycle to build a formula-style racing car capable of reaching speeds up to 150 kilometres per hour. While commercial racing cars of this variety typically carry price tags between 3 lakh and 4 lakh rupees, the student team completed the build for just 1.50 lakh rupees.
Six Months of Effort by a 30-Member Student Team
The construction of the racing car spanned six months of dedicated labor by a team of 30 mechanical engineering students under the leadership of student Mohammad Hussain. The entire assembly process took place in Jabalpur, where the group brought together custom engineering solutions to keep production costs low while maintaining strict functional requirements.
Sourcing Specialist Components Across Indian Cities
Because many specialized fabrication materials were unavailable locally in Jabalpur, the students procured components from several industrial hubs across the country. The structural chassis material and special frame pipes were purchased from Delhi. Critical safety gear was sourced from Pune to safeguard the driver during track runs, while the specialized racing tires were brought in from Indore. The team then integrated these distinct elements inside the college facility.
Technical Specifications and Vehicle Architecture
Mechanically, the petrol-driven go-kart features the Pulsar 150 engine paired with a 5-speed gearbox system and is equipped with a 4.5-litre fuel tank. The car sits on four tires measuring approximately 6 inches in height. Purpose-built for competitive racing rather than city streets, the vehicle is designed exclusively for cemented race tracks and cannot be operated on asphalt or rough road surfaces. It features a minimal ground clearance of only 2.5 centimetres above the track surface to ensure aerodynamic efficiency and cornering stability. The build is nearing complete readiness, with final cosmetic painting and bumper installations currently underway.
Preparations for the National Championship in Kolhapur
The team is now directing its focus toward competitive racing at the national level. The students have registered their vehicle for the Indian Karting Championship scheduled to be held in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Through their participation, the student engineers aim to compete against top collegiate teams and bring national recognition to Jabalpur Engineering College.
