A major corporate restructuring is reshaping the gaming ecosystem at Microsoft, where the Xbox brand is undertaking sweeping internal adjustments across several key game developers. The move comes during a turbulent stretch for the broader console market, including recent controversies around PlayStation regarding its shift toward disc-free hardware, its split with Hideo Kojima, and console price increases that left many players questioning digital ownership. While Microsoft recently welcomed Kojima Productions into its fold, the latest corporate disclosures reveal significant operational consolidation rather than steady expansion.
Staff Cuts Across Studios And Central Management
Xbox Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President Matt Booty detailed the structural shift in an official internal memo titled 'Continuing Our Reset'. The leadership team confirmed plans to eliminate 268 roles distributed across Halo Studios, various first-party game development teams, and the central XGS management infrastructure. Alongside the workforce reductions, the restructuring puts Hellblade developer Ninja Theory at risk of shutting down entirely, while reorganizing operational control for other key legacy groups.
Activision Blizzard Takes Charge Of Flagship Franchises
Under the new structural arrangement, the celebrated Halo universe will transition under the direct leadership of Call Of Duty creator Activision Blizzard. Operational responsibility for both Sea Of Thieves creator Rare and Age Of Empires developer World's Edge is also moving under Activision's administrative umbrella. To chart the next phase of the sci-fi franchise, Activision has started putting together a specialized, custom-built development group.
Addressing the transition in an official statement, Activision president Rob Kostich described the acquisition of responsibilities as a major milestone, saying that his team is thrilled to integrate the development personnel and legacy properties into their organization. Kostich outlined the studio's primary objective for the franchise, emphasizing that their purpose is to craft the strongest entry in the series to date while respecting the core mechanics and narrative universe that originally built its global fanbase. He added that work has already commenced on forming the specialized development collective tasked with delivering the upcoming chapter in partnership with the player base.
Continued Contraction Following July Job Cuts
The elimination of these 268 roles follows a much larger workforce reduction announced in July, when Xbox initiated an organizational restructuring targeting 3,600 positions throughout its divisions. A quarter of a century after the debut title revolutionized first-person shooters, the broader market pressures and internal realignments demonstrate that both the franchise and Microsoft's gaming division are being forced into a new phase of operational adaptation.
