Chitrakoot, a major spiritual and cultural hub in the Bundelkhand region, is set to add a fresh attraction to its tourism map. The district administration has initiated a comprehensive restoration project to revamp the historic Rana Talab, a water body over 100 years old located on Sonepur Road. Beyond preserving the heritage site, the initiative aims to transform the lake front into a modern recreational space equipped with state-of-the-art public amenities for visiting pilgrims and local residents.
Upgrading Infrastructure and Recreational Features
The restoration plan covers extensive environmental and structural improvements across the pond area. Work is currently underway to excavate accumulated silt, clear construction debris and pebbles, and eliminate invasive weeds such as behaya and water hyacinth. Beautifully designed bathing and walking ghats will be constructed around the water body. To secure the perimeter and maintain greenery, a dedicated boundary wall alongside inner green fencing is being erected. Visitors will be welcomed through an ornate entrance gate leading to paved walkways featuring interlocking tiles.
Focus on Fitness, Amenities and Water Conservation
To cater to families and fitness enthusiasts, the revamped complex will include an open gym, dedicated visitor sheds, seating benches, and play equipment for children. Efficient water management is being integrated into the site with the installation of submersible pumps and a pipeline system to regulate water levels and supply clean drinking water. Additional enhancements involve stone pitching, proper drainage channels, landscape horticulture, clear signage, and eco-friendly lighting powered by solar high-mast and solar street lights. The project is expected to significantly boost local groundwater recharge efforts.
Project Funding and Implementation Status
Providing details on the execution of the redevelopment effort, District Magistrate of Chitrakoot Pulkit Garg stated that the entire overhaul of Rana Talab carries an estimated total budget of around ₹2 crore. He highlighted that an initial funding allocation of ₹95.63 lakh has already been sanctioned and received, with 100 percent of these funds fully utilized toward the completed phases of construction. The District Magistrate emphasized that the objective is to retain the water body's historical character while delivering a vibrant public landmark that fosters environmental sustainability.
