There is a significant update for Indian travellers dreaming of a Thailand holiday. The Thai government has decided to keep offering visa-free entry to Indian passport holders, which means travellers will not need to arrange a visa in advance. However, this decision comes with a catch. The maximum time an Indian tourist can stay in the country without a visa has now been cut in half. Where earlier visitors could stay up to 60 days, the new rule allows a visa-free stay of only 30 days. This change was cleared in a meeting of the Thai cabinet.
Why the Stay Was Shortened
According to Thailand's Tourism Minister Sorasak Phancharoenworakul, the decision was taken by looking closely at how Indian travellers actually plan their trips. His argument is that most Indian tourists who visit Thailand stay for less than 30 days anyway. In that sense, a 30-day window matches their real travel needs and should not inconvenience anyone. The government has also made it clear that if any problems surface with this arrangement in the future, the decision can be reviewed again.
What the Earlier Rule Was
Until now, Indian citizens could remain in Thailand for a full 60 days without any visa. Back in May this year, the Thai government had floated a proposal to reduce the number of countries eligible for visa-free access and to bring the permitted stay down to 30 days. At that time, however, the proposal was never put into effect. This left travellers confused, and it also had a direct impact on the number of tourists arriving in Thailand from India.
Why India Matters So Much
Just how big the Indian market is for Thailand becomes clear from one fact. Among all foreign tourists arriving in the country this year, India ranks third, trailing only China and Malaysia. That is why Indian tourists are treated as a backbone of Thailand's tourism industry, and it is precisely this importance that led the government to keep visa-free entry alive for Indians.
Other Countries That Benefited
Apart from India, citizens of Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta and the Maldives have also been granted 30-day visa-free entry. Following this decision, people from a total of 60 countries and territories will now be able to enjoy the facility. The Thai government says some foreign nationals had been misusing the visa-free system. A few were working illegally, while others were flouting the rules. To curb this misuse, the government has chosen to tighten monitoring and make the rules more balanced.
