Security infrastructure along the northeast frontier has reached a major milestone, with 805.99 kilometres of barbed-wire fencing now constructed along Tripura's 856-kilometre international border with Bangladesh. Official data provided by the state Home Department confirms that while the majority of the boundary is secured, roughly 50 kilometres remain unfenced across multiple border sectors.
Assembly Report Highlights Pending Border Stretches
The updated status of the border security project was disclosed in a written submission to the state Assembly. Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma had formally requested details regarding the overall progress of the fencing work and specific areas where construction has yet to finish. In response, the Home Department identified several key stretches across five districts where physical barriers have not been erected.
Key Districts and Locations Awaiting Completion
According to the official department response, pending fencing work is spread across strategic border locations. In South Tripura, the Belonia sector has remaining gaps, while Sepahijala district has pending stretches in Sonamura. The border areas near Khowai also feature incomplete sections. In North Tripura, fencing work remains unfinished along the Kanchanpur stretch. Furthermore, Dhalai district accounts for multiple incomplete zones, including Longtharai Valley, Kamalpur, Ambassa, and Gandacherra.
Multiple Bottlenecks Delay Final Construction Phase
Addressing the causes behind the delay, the Home Department noted that challenging physical geography has significantly impeded progress. Heavy riverine channels, seasonal streams, and rugged terrain along proposed routes create complex engineering hurdles. Additionally, objections raised by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at specific border points have periodically halted operations. Slow execution by designated construction agencies has further extended project timelines. To resolve these challenges, the Tripura state government has repeatedly approached the Central government, seeking high-level intervention to accelerate work on the remaining 50-kilometre stretch.

Tripura is geographically enveloped by Bangladesh on three sides, spanning the northern, western, and southern borders. Maintaining uninterrupted fencing along the entire 856-kilometre boundary is regarded as essential for effective border management, preventing illegal crossings, and curbing cross-border crime.
