Speaking at a commemorative event in Agartala on Friday for Partition Horror Remembrance Day, Saha stated that people who migrated to Tripura from former East Pakistan should be designated as displaced persons rather than refugees, as extreme circumstances compelled them to leave behind their properties, homes, and ancestral lands.
Demographic Impact and Border Dynamics
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Manik Saha underscored that the 1947 division of undivided India took place against the collective will of the people. Prior to Partition, areas constituting modern-day Pakistan and Bangladesh were integral parts of the nation. Due to Tripura sharing a direct border with East Pakistan, the geopolitical realignment triggered a massive influx of people, primarily Bengali Hindus, which fundamentally altered the social composition and demographic structure of the state.
