Passengers landing at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala will soon benefit from a streamlined transport booking system. The state administration has scheduled the launch of an online cab service for September 3, which will roll out simultaneously across the airport as well as the Agartala and Jogendranagar railway stations.
Official Inauguration and Planning Meeting
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury is scheduled to formally inaugurate this new transportation facility at the airport. According to Additional Secretary Subrata Chowdhury, the initiative was finalized during a dedicated Transport Department meeting held at the state secretariat on Friday, with the Transport Minister presiding over the discussions.
Modernizing Public Transit and Protecting Passengers
This upcoming rollout forms a core part of the state government's broader strategy to modernize public transit infrastructure and establish a more efficient network that keeps pace with growing digital technology adoption. Officials noted that the online cab option is designed to offer enhanced convenience and safety to incoming passengers, shielding them from the traditional hassles and potential harassment often encountered while arranging transport outside terminals.
Fare Determinations and Strict Penalties
While the service date is fast approaching, specific cab fares for the platform are yet to be finalized. The Transport Department plans to collect rate charts from various transport unions before fixing the official fare structure. Authorities warned that drivers or operators caught charging passengers above the newly notified rates will face immediate penalties.
High Passenger Footfall Driving Demand
The necessity for a structured online booking framework is underscored by the heavy daily movement of travelers through these transport hubs. The airport currently accommodates approximately 4,500 passengers daily, while the Agartala railway station records a substantial daily footfall of at least 10,000 people, indicating a strong baseline demand for the upcoming service.
