A recent broadcast of the reality quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati 18 witnessed an emotionally overwhelming chapter when contestant Kapila Taneja from Bilaspur took the hotseat. Beyond her impressive command over the questions, her harrowing tale of surviving domestic brutality and enduring decades of emotional isolation left everyone deeply shaken. The reality of her journey moved host Amitabh Bachchan to tears as he listened to the systemic cruelty she faced.
Surviving an Attempt on Her Life Over Dowry Demands
During the gameplay, Kapila recounted that entering into a love marriage and failing to fulfill dowry demands triggered severe hostility from her in-laws. The mistreatment reached a life-threatening peak when her mother-in-law poured kerosene over her and set her ablaze using a candle. The incident occurred during winter, causing her synthetic saree and woolen sweater to melt and adhere to her skin as flames engulfed her body.
Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind amid agonizing pain, Kapila saved her own life by submerging herself entirely into a water tank. She remained unconscious for nearly two weeks following the blaze. Only after regaining consciousness did doctors begin the extensive medical surgeries needed to treat her severe burn injuries.
A 24-Year Separation from Her Only Child
The tragedy did not end with her physical recovery, as her in-laws forcibly separated her from her infant daughter. Over the past 24 years, Kapila has been deprived of both seeing her child and hearing her voice. It was only through conversations with former neighbors that she eventually discovered her daughter had relocated to another city for employment.
Upon hearing this painful separation, Amitabh Bachchan stated that terming what she experienced as mere injustice would be an understatement. He emphasized that no woman should ever have to suffer such indignity or trauma. The veteran host subsequently used the television platform to issue an earnest plea, urging the estranged daughter to reach out and reconnect with her mother.
Game Progression and Dreams for the Future
Today, Kapila sustains herself independently by offering tutoring classes to local children. On the hotseat, she successfully answered 11 questions to secure 7.5 lakh rupees, complemented by a 90 thousand rupee bonus from the Super Sandook round, concluding her run with a combined purse of 8.4 lakh rupees. She encountered an impasse on the 12th question regarding a West Asian city separated from British India during the 1930s. Choosing caution over guesswork, she decided to quit the competition gracefully.
Discussing her intentions for the prize money, Kapila revealed that her immediate priority is undergoing corrective surgery to receive an artificial ear. Looking further ahead, she expressed a heartfelt commitment to establish a dedicated shelter home providing care and refuge for unmarried mothers.
