Netflix has officially announced a brand-new live-action prequel series titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, expanding the universe of the global hit franchise. The announcement arrived on the anniversary of that fateful November day in 1983 when Will Byers vanished, kicking off the entire saga. The upcoming show is co-created by The First Shadow play director Kate Trefry alongside series masterminds the Duffer Brothers, with Joe Wright directing the project. The series is officially slated to premiere on the streaming platform in 2028.
Setting And Timeline Details
While the initial teaser offers just a glimpse of what is to come, it provides crucial narrative context for the expansion. The prequel takes viewers directly to Marion, Nevada, placing the narrative in the immediate vicinity of the Nevada experiment featured in The First Shadow stage show. Furthermore, the storyline is set in April 1955, taking place precisely four years before the events of the play, which explores the origin and ultimate corruption of Henry Creel, also known as Vecna. The Duffer Brothers previously hinted that a prequel would unpack the Dimension X rock encounter from the scientist's briefcase seen in Stranger Things Season 5, a connection further supported by the dimensional rift glimpsed in the teaser.
Creators Share Their Vision
Reflecting on the announcement, Matt and Ross Duffer shared in a statement on Netflix's website that they had been dreaming of the project for many years and found seeing it become a reality to be surreal and exhilarating. They described it as classic Stranger Things fused with a thrillingly fresh setting, new heroes, and fresh villains. Co-creator Kate Trefry added that bringing this chapter to life alongside the Duffers and director Joe Wright is an immense honor, promising a story that retains all the wonder, horror, and mystery of the flagship show while exploring uncharted territory.
Expanding The Upside Down Lore
With The First Shadow having received a proshot treatment earlier this year featuring a Marion, Nevada location shift, anticipation is running high for the 2028 release. The teaser's clever use of The Chords' “Sh-Boom” hints at deeper Creel connections, assuring fans that the journey down the Dimension X and Upside Down rabbit hole is far from over. Audiences can expect plenty of answers alongside fresh mysteries when the adventure finally arrives.
