Legendary Indian boxer Mary Kom, who is currently participating in the television reality show Bigg Boss 20, recently laid bare the harrowing personal struggles that unfolded away from the sporting spotlight. While sports enthusiasts worldwide know her for dismantling formidable opponents inside the ring, she shared that her personal journey has been marked by profound emotional turbulence and sacrifices.
An Emotional Revelation to Fellow Contestants
In an intimate discussion inside the Bigg Boss 20 house with fellow participants Isha Rikhi, Riti Tiwari, and Kanika Mann, Mary Kom became deeply emotional. She noted that people often judge her solely by the sheer strength, grit, and resilience she exhibits between the boxing ropes, rarely realizing that she was completely shattered from the inside during several phases of her life.
Sharing one of the most painful chapters of her personal journey, she admitted that there was a phase when she felt utterly overwhelmed and contemplated ending everything. What pulled her back from the brink was looking at the faces of her young children, who provided her with the strength to carry on. She explained that today, she lives entirely for her children.
Childhood Sacrifices and Unquenched Competitive Spirit
Reflecting on her past, Mary Kom emphasized that she weathered immense adversity right from her childhood. Reaching the peak of international sports required major sacrifices for her family, her home state, and her country.
Speaking about her sporting passion, she noted that the hunger to win remains fully intact within her. However, advancing age means she can no longer step into competitive matches. Mary Kom also revealed that while she used to weep frequently in earlier times, she has now learned to hold her tears inside and press forward despite the pain.
The Historic Ascent to a Six-Time World Champion
Mary Kom stands as one of the most decorated boxers in Indian sporting history, having scripted records by clinching the gold medal at the World Boxing Championship six times. Her passion for the sport was originally ignited after watching Manipur boxer Dingko Singh achieve sporting glory.
Her initial journey was fraught with resistance, as her father opposed her decision to take up boxing. Determined to succeed despite the odds, she trained in secrecy while battling deep financial hardship and poverty. Her sheer perseverance ultimately transformed her into a global sporting icon, bringing immense pride and recognition to India on international stages.
