Aspiring medical professionals in Tripura are set to benefit from significantly expanded training opportunities following a major announcement regarding specialist education in the state. Agartala Government Medical College is expanding its academic capacity, offering a much larger window for students pursuing advanced medical degrees.
Expansion Across Specialized Disciplines
The institution will feature 153 postgraduate MD and MS seats for the 2026-27 academic year, marking a substantial increase from the previous count of 95 seats. Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also oversees the health portfolio, shared the development on social media, expressing enthusiasm over the major boost in postgraduate capacity at the prominent institution.
Support from Central Leadership
The addition of 58 new seats spans 16 specialized disciplines, designed to create broader prospects for local youth while reinforcing the state's overall healthcare framework and medical education network. Saha extended heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, crediting their ongoing backing for the strengthening of medical infrastructure across Tripura.
Additional Growth in Undergraduate Seats
This postgraduate expansion follows another major milestone for the institution. Earlier, the National Medical Commission had approved an increase in the undergraduate MBBS intake at the college, raising it from 150 to 250 seats for the exact same academic year. Together, these developments dramatically enhance the training capacity of the college across multiple educational levels.
