Following the opening of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, the influx of tourists arriving in Dehradun has witnessed a massive surge. While travelers now reach Dehradun from Delhi in just two and a half hours, they frequently encounter massive traffic jams on weekends while heading onwards to Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Mussoorie. To tackle this persistent traffic congestion, an elevated road has been proposed for construction from Asharodi to Mohkampumar. However, the expansion of this infrastructure project puts hundreds of residential houses at risk of demolition, prompting affected families to continuously stage protests.
The Crisis Facing Vaikunthi in Poojawala
The construction activities for the Mohkampumar-Asharodi elevated road have brought Vaikunthi, a helpless elderly woman living in Dehradun's Poojawala area, to the brink of losing her shelter. Vaikunthi has already endured immense personal tragedy in her life, having lost her husband to a heart attack, while a severe illness subsequently took the life of her only son. The house that she built together with her family now remains the sole support of her old age and the final refuge of her life.
The Last Bastion of Memories
With tears in her eyes and a trembling voice, Vaikunthi is pleading with the administration and society for her rights. She states that the funeral processions of both her husband and her only son departed from this very house, deeply intertwining her emotions and countless memories with the dwelling. Vaikunthi explains that she has been living here for the past 15 years, having managed to build this home after moving out of rented accommodations with great difficulty. She clearly asserts that this is the final legacy of her husband and she will not abandon it until her dying breath.
Fear of Homelessness Amid Development
Terribly frightened and unnerved by the threat of becoming homeless in this race for development, Vaikunthi expressed extreme distress over losing her roof. Driven by the fear of losing her shelter, she went as far as to state that if her home is taken away from her, she will end her life right inside the house. As a single and destitute woman, she has no alternative place to live or any financial backing. This grim situation has completely shattered the final thread of security in her life.
A Question of Progress Versus Sensitivity
Vaikunthi's story is not merely about the destruction of a brick-and-mortar structure, but rather a poignant tragedy involving the collapse of the final sanctuary of a broken soul. In the name of infrastructural development, the homes of several helpless and vulnerable families like Vaikunthi's are being sacrificed. This incident raises a profound question as to whether the sensitivities and rights of the weakest and most destitute segments of society hold any value amid grand claims of progress and development.
