Police in the Jadavpur area of South Kolkata have taken a young man into custody on serious charges of sexually assaulting a woman and defrauding her of a substantial financial sum. Identified as Anubhav Bhattacharya, the accused reportedly befriended the victim through a social media platform before exploiting her trust. Following a formal complaint lodged by the victim, law enforcement officers acted swiftly to detain the suspect.
Initial Contact and Building Trust
According to case details provided by law enforcement, the acquaintance between the victim and Anubhav Bhattacharya began on social media. Over time, their interactions grew more frequent, leading them to exchange phone numbers. The two maintained regular phone communications and met in person on multiple occasions. Impressed by the polite and good behavior demonstrated by the accused during these early meetings, the victim developed no suspicions about his motives and placed complete faith in him.
Assault at the Birthday Celebration
Exploiting this established rapport, Bhattacharya extended an invitation to the victim to attend his birthday party at a specified location. Trusting his intentions, the woman arrived at the designated address as planned. However, upon arrival, she discovered that no other guests or individuals were present at the venue. Taking advantage of the isolated setting, the accused allegedly committed sexual assault against the victim.
False Promises and Financial Extortion
To prevent immediate legal backlash and maintain control over the victim, the accused subsequently promised to marry her. Relying on this assurance, the victim continued interaction with him, during which he allegedly assaulted her again under the false pretense of marriage. Furthermore, Bhattacharya extracted Rs 1.5 lakh from the woman after claiming that he required funds for business purposes. Once the monetary amount of Rs 1,50,000 was in his possession, he began ignoring her continuously, leading to a complete cessation of communication between them.
Police Complaint and Legal Proceedings
Realizing she had been deceived and violated, the woman finally approached the authorities and registered a complaint at the East Jadavpur Police Station. Police initiated an investigation into the matter and arrested Anubhav Bhattacharya on Monday. On Tuesday, police officials confirmed that the accused had been taken into custody and stated that a detailed investigation into the allegations remains active.
