A formal legislative push is underway to officially alter the designation of West Bengal to align more closely with its regional heritage. Bharatiya Janata Party state president Samik Bhattacharya announced on Monday that the administration will soon table a dedicated bill in the legislative assembly to change the state's name to Paschim Banga, describing the move as a conscious initiative to reconnect the region with its historical legacy.
Legislative Assembly Bill Slated for Upcoming Session
Addressing queries regarding the planned construction of 'Paschim Banga Bhavan' in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Samik Bhattacharya explained the rationale behind the rebranding. Speaking on the matter, Bhattacharya noted,
"Now you will not need to use names like West Bengal, because the state government very soon, possibly in the next session of the assembly, will introduce a bill to change the name of the state to Paschim Banga. This decision has been taken keeping the history of the state in mind."
Once tabled and enacted by the assembly, the new nomenclature will establish Paschim Banga as the primary designation across all public paperwork, statutory bodies, and administrative protocols. According to party leadership, this alteration serves to restore long-standing historical sentiment rather than serve as a cosmetic linguistic tweak.
Uniform Civil Code Scheduled Within Six Months
Alongside the proposed renaming, the state administration is moving forward with significant legal and civil reforms. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently declared that the Uniform Civil Code, or UCC, will be implemented across the state within the next six months. This legal framework will be structured following the blueprints already adopted in Uttarakhand and Gujarat.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also indicated that complementary legislation will be introduced to address forced religious conversions, alongside strict measures designed to penalize love jihad and land jihad.
Anticipated Structural Outcomes of the Uniform Civil Code
The roll-out of a standardized civil code is expected to introduce major shifts in personal laws and judicial dispute resolution
- Universal Rights and Gender Parity: Equal civil rights will be guaranteed irrespective of gender and religious affiliation, introducing uniform inheritance rules for women across all communities.
- Standardized Matrimonial Rules: Consistent legal regulations will govern divorce proceedings, bringing an end to archaic and discriminatory customs.
- Strengthened Statutory Unity: Reinforces the principle of one law for the entire territory, narrowing the gap between diverging personal legal systems.
- Streamlined Civil Frameworks: Eliminates the complex and conflicting provisions of distinct community codes, helping foster social cohesion and national integration.
- Accelerated Judicial Decisions: Legal proceedings will gain greater procedural clarity, reducing confusion during adjudication and speeding up case closures in courts.
