Political friction in West Bengal has intensified sharply following pointed remarks exchanged between the ruling Mamata Banerjee administration and political opponents, with public discourse turning increasingly abrasive. Senior leader Suvendu Adhikari took aim at recent political demonstrations while addressing a gathering organised on the occasion of the birth centenary of former Vishva Hindu Parishad president Ashok Singhal, touching extensively upon internal security and governance issues.
The Shivaji Park Demonstration and Objections to the Election Commission
The backdrop to this sharp rhetoric includes an agitation staged at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. The demonstration, led by Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), alleged procedural irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Reacting directly to that agitation and the surrounding political rhetoric, Suvendu Adhikari launched a strong rebuke against those targeting constitutional bodies.
Addressing the gathering, Suvendu Adhikari remarked:
“A lot of bedbugs have started appearing all around again. We must remain completely alert and united. We will not tolerate any kind of anti-national activity in the state.”
The statement clearly highlighted his view that elements questioning institutional frameworks and staging such demonstrations across various regions require firm countermeasures. He emphasized that vigilant steps must be taken promptly against factions seeking to disrupt the prevailing order under the guise of political agitation.
Concerns Raised Over Jadavpur University Campus Slogans
Extending his remarks beyond party politics, the senior leader expressed serious concern regarding the political atmosphere within educational institutions. He specifically referenced Jadavpur University, issuing a blunt warning against factions raising anti-India or secessionist slogans inside the campus. He underscored that university environments should not serve as breeding grounds for divisive ideologies.
Referring to a published press account, he highlighted that a group of nationalist youth had confronted such elements directly on the university grounds. Suvendu Adhikari stressed that the time has come to completely root out such disruptive networks and restore discipline and institutional integrity.
Call for Vigilance and Collective Resolve
Concluding his speech, the leader declared that destabilising activities would face zero tolerance across the state. He urged citizens to stay alert and unified, preventing disruptive forces from causing damage to societal peace. These sharp comments have further heightened political temperatures across the region.
