During an event in Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari showered high praise on Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for his working style. He stated that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw believes in actual work rather than empty words. The Chief Minister pointed out that during the tenure of the previous administration, railway projects were stalled, but with the current double-engine government, the state is witnessing accelerated development. He expressed confidence that under these policies, West Bengal will transform into a developed state and secure the number one position in the country.
Assurance of Industrial Investment and Law and Order
To boost industrial growth in the region, Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari extended an open invitation to investors. Addressing industrialists, he urged them to come and invest in West Bengal. Reaffirming the state government's commitment, he assured that the administration will maintain robust and foolproof law and order from the ground up. Additionally, he requested investors to establish more railway-related industries in the state to generate fresh employment opportunities locally and strengthen the overall industrial infrastructure.
Call to Include Ganga Sagar on the Railway Map
Highlighting the religious and strategic importance of Ganga Sagar, the Chief Minister put forward a new proposal before the Railway Minister. He noted that robust rail connectivity is essential to reach Ganga Sagar conveniently. Currently, a bridge is being constructed to improve accessibility to the area. In this context, he formally requested Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to integrate Ganga Sagar into the official railway map since the location is directly tied to the deep religious faith of millions of devotees.
Religious and Geographical Significance of Ganga Sagar
Ganga Sagar is a renowned and sacred Hindu pilgrimage center located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. This site houses the ancient ashram of sage Kapil Muni, and every year during the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, millions of devotees gather here to take a holy dip. Amidst these spiritual beliefs, a popular saying goes that all pilgrimages are visited repeatedly, but Ganga Sagar is visited only once. Geographically, this is the location where the Bhagirathi-Hooghly branch of the Ganga River meets the Bay of Bengal.
Transportation Challenges and Benefits of Railway Connectivity
At present, there is no direct train service available for Ganga Sagar, causing significant hardships for pilgrims traveling from various parts of the country. If this region is connected to the railway network, travelers will benefit from direct train services, allowing pilgrims and tourists to reach the destination easily without hurdles. Better rail connectivity will expand the reach of the Makar Sankranti mela and enhance its international recognition as large numbers of foreign tourists will be able to visit effortlessly.
Boosting the Fair Internationally and Development Plans
This is an ambitious plan aimed at promoting the Ganga Sagar mela on an international scale, developing better infrastructure, and fostering holistic development across the island. Since the Ganga Sagar fair is considered extremely sacred for Sanatani Hindus, the issue of boosting rail connectivity has remained a major talking point. Earlier, Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari grabbed headlines when he made a remark questioning whether a Chief Minister has tails or horns. Recently, another statement by him asserting that only those who believe in Sanatan Dharma should touch idols also stirred considerable political ripples.
