A regular international flight turned into a terrifying mid-air struggle when violent hostility broke out inside the flight deck high above the clouds. Operating flydubai flight FZ1073 on its route from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Captain Smit Machchhar was abruptly attacked with a knife by the Omani co-pilot. As the violent confrontation escalated, the aircraft went into a sudden plunge, losing around 14,000 feet of altitude within moments. Despite suffering severe injuries and bleeding heavily, the Indian commander maintained composure, unlocked the flight deck door, and successfully touched down at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, preserving the lives of all 174 passengers on board.
Mid-Air Plunge and Panic Among Travellers
The aircraft was ferrying 174 passengers, including a substantial number of Israeli citizens. The calm journey was shattered when screams and sounds of a violent struggle began filtering out of the cockpit. Flight tracking records confirmed that the passenger plane experienced a steep and alarming drop of approximately 14,000 feet, sparking immediate fears of an impending crash. During this critical sequence, distress calls were transmitted from the aircraft, initially indicating an emergency and subsequently broadcasting a hijacking alert.
Wounded Captain Unlocks Door as Passengers Intervene
During the assault, the cockpit door remained firmly locked in compliance with standard flight security protocols. Despite being bloodied and severely hurt, Captain Smit Machchhar managed to hit the internal release switch to unlock the fortified entrance. Looking inside, horrified flyers observed the captain badly injured alongside widespread bloodstains. Realizing the extreme danger, several passengers rushed inside the flight deck, overpowered the Omani co-pilot, and pinned him down to neutralize the threat.
Successful Diversion to Tabuk Airport
With the assailant subdued, Captain Machchhar diverted the airliner toward Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. The skilled execution of the emergency procedure allowed the plane to complete a safe touchdown on the runway, avoiding a major catastrophe. All 174 travelers subsequently reached Israel unharmed, having survived what many later described as a harrowing contest between life and death.
Praise Pours In for the Hero Pilot
Following their safe arrival, passengers expressed immense gratitude toward the Indian pilot for his exceptional bravery. Israeli national Einav Avizemer took to social media platform X to express heartfelt thanks, writing, "Thank you Captain Smit Machchhar & Thank you India." Observers noted that his split-second decision to unlock the cockpit while sustaining physical trauma was decisive in preventing a fatal crash.
