A major organizational shift has unfolded within the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee as Olympian and former hockey captain Pargat Singh has been named the new state unit president with immediate effect. The development follows the resignation of outgoing chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring earlier in the day. An official statement released by the party formally announced Pargat Singh's appointment while extending gratitude to Amarinder Singh Raja Warring for his contributions during his tenure at the helm.
Charanjit Singh Channi's Recommendation and High Command Approval
Pargat Singh shares close political ties with former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Over the past several weeks, he had been actively coordinating with Charanjit Singh Channi in an internal campaign challenging Amarinder Singh Raja Warring's leadership. Acting upon the explicit recommendation of Charanjit Singh Channi, Rahul Gandhi finalized the decision to entrust Pargat Singh with the responsibility of directing the party's affairs in Punjab.
Crucial Meeting With Rahul Gandhi and Allegations Against Sachin Pilot
Prior to handing over his resignation, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring engaged in an extended discussion with Rahul Gandhi. However, public comments made by Raja Warring immediately following that dialogue revealed that his departure might not quell the internal factionalism within the state ranks. Raja Warring directed indirect criticism toward Sachin Pilot, who recently took over as the party's in-charge for Punjab. He pointed out that while a full month had passed since Sachin Pilot assumed charge of the state, he had visited Punjab for merely 2 hours during that entire period, during which only a brief interaction took place.
Attributing the circumstances of his resignation directly to Sachin Pilot's approach, Raja Warring expressed that the leadership seemed predetermined on his removal from the outset. Remarking on the transition, Raja Warring noted, "Perhaps Sachin Pilot had made up his mind to remove me." He reiterated that it felt as though the decision to replace him had been finalized immediately after the new state in-charge was assigned.
Reorganization Ahead of the 2027 Assembly Elections
This leadership overhaul comes at a critical juncture, with Punjab scheduled to hold assembly elections next year in 2027. The state unit has witnessed protracted internal disputes and persistent organizational friction over recent months. Executing a transition at the highest level of the state party apparatus just ahead of crucial electoral preparations marks an important strategic move as the party attempts to steady its ranks.
Reactions From Opposition Parties
The leadership crisis has provided immediate ammunition to opposition parties in the state. Leaders from both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party asserted that the infighting seen over recent months represents only the opening phase of a wider dispute. Former Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu launched a direct attack, stating, "Rahul Gandhi is not loyal to anyone." He alleged that the party follows an approach of discarding leaders after using them, citing Raja Warring as the latest instance. Adding to the critique, Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon claimed that Warring's resignation is merely the beginning and predicted widespread desertions from the Congress ranks before elections take place.
