The domestic cricket season has commenced with severe disruption for Arunachal Pradesh, as internal administrative conflicts and ongoing legal proceedings have forced the state team out of their opening Ranji Trophy fixture against Nagaland. The match was scheduled to begin on October 11 in Ahmedabad. The administrative deadlock has also ruled the state squad out of their initial CK Nayudu Trophy clash against Meghalaya. The BCCI has confirmed the cancellation of both matches, compounding the setbacks for the region's cricketers.
Disputed Elections and Legal Proceedings in Itanagar Bench
The administrative breakdown stems from a major conflict surrounding the elections of the Arunachal Cricket Association (ARCA). Two opposing factions within the body have locked horns over organizational control. Multiple district cricket associations challenged the electoral process, alleging severe irregularities and manipulation during the polls. The dispute subsequently reached the Itanagar Bench of the Gauhati High Court, which issued a stay order on the matter.
Selection Paralyzed Amid Absence of Valid Committee
Owing to the judicial stay and the lack of a legally functional governing committee, the association has been unable to administer regular cricketing operations. Consequently, no selection committee could be convened to pick the squads for the major domestic tournaments. Senior player Techi Neri confirmed the gravity of the situation, stating that players remain stuck in Itanagar without any team selection having taken place. He highlighted that neither formal preparation nor practice camps could be organized ahead of the domestic calendar.
Severe Setback for Professional and Junior Cricketers
The institutional standoff has delivered a harsh blow to professional and budding athletes who have no involvement in the boardroom battle. For numerous state cricketers, competitive matches serve as the principal foundation for their livelihoods and professional careers. The governance crisis has also paralyzed the junior pathways, as the state under-19 contingent was earlier unable to take part in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, depriving young prospects of critical competitive experience.
