Demonstrating his enduring class in domestic cricket, veteran fast bowler Umesh Yadav has made a remarkable return to red-ball action. The thirty-eight-year-old speedster stepped back onto the Ranji Trophy stage after a gap of nearly two years and immediately made an impact while representing Punjab against Assam. Playing in Chandigarh on the second day of the match, he utilized his vast experience to trouble the batters and claimed a five-wicket haul. Playing his first Ranji fixture since December 2024, the seasoned pacer delivered twenty-four overs across the opening two days, conceding seventy runs while picking up five crucial scalps. His disciplined spell helped restrict Assam to a total of three hundred and seventy-three runs. This milestone marked the sixteenth time in his first-class career that he has taken five wickets in a single innings.
Early breakthroughs set the tone for the bowling attack
Right from the opening day of the fixture, the veteran pacer found his rhythm and put the opposition under immediate pressure. Early in the innings, he dismissed opener Rishab Das without scoring, removing him before he could trouble the scorers. He followed this up by sending number three batter Rajveer Singh back to the pavilion as well, denying the batting side any early stability. On Monday, during the subsequent phase of the match, he dismantled the lower-order batting lineup by claiming the wickets of Amlan Jyoti Das, Mukhtar Hussain, and Mohit Thakur. These breakthroughs ensured that Punjab successfully kept Assam's total below the four-hundred-run mark.
Workload management and support from young pacers
Over the course of the match, Umesh bowled a total of twenty-four overs while conceding seventy runs and removing five batters. He operated in tandem with twenty-six-year-old Punjab fast bowler Gurnur Brar, who delivered twenty-three overs from the other end. Despite resilient knocks from Assam's middle-order batters, the two fast bowlers successfully applied the brakes on the scoring rate and prevented the opponents from running away with a massive total. Captain Danish Das and Shibasankar Roy played pivotal roles in anchoring the innings, with Danish scoring one hundred and three runs from one hundred and eighty-six balls, while Shibasankar Roy remained unbeaten on one hundred and forty-three.
Extensive first-class career and joining Punjab
Throughout his extensive first-class career, Umesh has now appeared in a total of one hundred and twenty-four matches. Across two hundred and twenty-six innings, he has accumulated three hundred and eighty wickets at an average of twenty-nine point seven one, with his best bowling figures in an innings remaining forty-eight runs for seven wickets. Following his departure from Vidarbha, speculations circulated regarding whether he would join a smaller team, but he clarified that he preferred to play for a strong and competitive side with a winning momentum rather than a weaker unit. This motivation led him to align with the formidable Punjab squad for the current season.
