Fidji Simo, who served as the CEO of AGI Deployment at OpenAI, has announced her resignation from the company. In a statement posted to X, Simo explained that she had taken medical leave three months ago following a severe escalation of a chronic illness that she has been managing for the past seven years. She noted that the journey toward recovery has proven to be significantly longer and more demanding than she originally anticipated, necessitating her full attention and focus on her health.
Professional Background and Tenure
Simo’s tenure at the organization began in March 2024 when she joined the OpenAI board of directors. The following year, CEO Sam Altman appointed her to lead the product and business sectors, a move intended to allow Altman more bandwidth to prioritize research and the scaling of the company’s data center infrastructure. Before her time at OpenAI, Simo held notable leadership roles, serving as the CEO of Instacart and as the head of the Facebook app at Meta.
Addressing Health Complications
Shortly before she began her role at OpenAI, Simo experienced a substantial health relapse. She was diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome, or POTS, back in 2019. During a temporary leave announcement sent to OpenAI staff in April, she admitted to deferring medical testing and therapeutic interventions to ensure she remained committed to her role without missing work. She eventually acknowledged that she had pushed her physical limits too far and needed to pursue new medical interventions to stabilize her condition.
Executive Reorganization
The departure of Simo follows a broader period of executive restructuring within OpenAI. During her absence, former COO Brad Lightcap transitioned to a role overseeing special projects, while OpenAI president and cofounder Greg Brockman took over the company’s product strategy. Since Simo stepped back from her duties, OpenAI has continued to reshape its product teams, most recently appointing Thibault Sottiaux as the head of core products, a portfolio that includes ChatGPT.
Strategic Focus and Future IPO
OpenAI is currently refining its operations to prioritize a few key products ahead of a planned IPO, which is anticipated for 2027. The company is reportedly aiming for a valuation of $1 trillion. As part of this strategic realignment, OpenAI has merged teams working on ChatGPT, its AI-powered browser, and its AI coding agent to create a unified superapp. Furthermore, the company has discontinued more speculative ventures like Sora. On Thursday, OpenAI revealed the most significant update to ChatGPT since its inception, launching an AI agent capable of taking actions on behalf of users—such as writing code and manipulating local files—while simultaneously redesigning the desktop app. This update intends to bring features previously exclusive to Codex to the wider ChatGPT user base, enabling users to build bespoke software projects using AI tools.
