OpenAI plans to make GPT-6 Astra available to paid customers in the coming days, rolling it out first to enterprise clients participating in its Daybreak early access program. This initial release will be followed by availability for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business plan subscribers. However, the organization did not state whether the new model will eventually be rolled out to free users of ChatGPT.

During a press briefing with reporters, high-ranking OpenAI executives conveyed profound confidence in the company's newest artificial intelligence model. Greg Brockman, the president and cofounder, stated that he personally believes the world has now crossed into the era of artificial general intelligence, defining it as AI systems that generally surpass human intelligence.
Brockman told reporters that it is entirely reasonable to feel that humanity is now in the AGI era. He expressed his belief that looking back from a couple of years in the future, people will pinpoint this exact time period and this specific model as the true genesis of AGI.
Navigating Market Competition and Expansion
The release of GPT-6 Astra arrives at a critical juncture for the organization. The creators of ChatGPT are working aggressively to advance their technological capabilities and drive sales ahead of a planned initial public offering, while simultaneously striving to maintain rigorous safety and security standards. At the same time, OpenAI faces intense competition from Anthropic, its primary rival, which is also preparing for an upcoming IPO.
Advanced Computer Use and Browser Navigation
In an official blog post, OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as the world's best computer use model, asserting that it can navigate computers and web browsers on behalf of humans with far greater proficiency than its predecessors. Historically, artificial intelligence developers have struggled to build models capable of reliably browsing websites, filling out complex forms, and manipulating software tools with the speed and precision required to replace human effort. During internal testing, OpenAI observed that GPT-6 Astra successfully booked Department of Motor Vehicles appointments, searched for job listings, and conducted apartment hunts significantly faster than an average person.
Furthermore, the company maintains that GPT-6 Astra is the safest and most aligned AI model it has ever deployed. Jakub Pachocki, the chief scientist at OpenAI, informed reporters that the organization closely monitors the model's chain-of-thought process—the internal mechanism it utilizes to work through complex problems—to ensure safe deployment.
The Growing Challenge of Model Monitorability
Despite these safety measures, Pachocki cautioned that ensuring advanced models do not cause unintended harm is becoming increasingly difficult and could potentially act as a bottleneck for future AI advancement. He noted that as model capabilities expand, maintaining clear visibility into their internal operations presents a mounting challenge.
Pachocki explained that the company takes this visibility for granted to some extent, but monitorability grows more challenging as capabilities increase. He emphasized that confidence in monitoring could constrain further development because the organization would refuse to accept any degradation in its ability to monitor alignment beyond a specific threshold, opting to withhold scaling until sufficient monitoring confidence is regained.
